It’s the first time Netflix has done something like this with a Polish film. I wonder if it will pay off

“Mr. Kleks’ Academy” was undoubtedly a cinema hit and has been great to watch since it reached Polish Netflix users. Now it goes to 190 countries. Will it be an international success?

During Thursday’s presentation, among others: fragments of the second film in the series, titled “Kleks and the invention of Filip Golarz”, the host of the event, Krzysztof Czeczot, mentioned that in the case of “Paradise of Mr. Kleks”, Netflix decided to do something unusual – the Polish production was dubbed in over 20 languages. On Wednesday, June 19, it hit Netflix in 190 countries. The first foreign reviews have already appeared.

Maciej Kawulski: Never before have I been so curious about what others will think about our work

The long-awaited world premiere is today. Over 190 countries and dozens of language groups,” Maciej Kawulski, the director of the film, wrote on Instagram on Wednesday. The director added:

I’ve never been so curious about what others will think about our work.

There are the first foreign reviews of “Mr. Kleks’ Academy”

Unfortunately, he probably won’t be satisfied with the response. There are only a few reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but they all agree: it’s not a good movie. “‘Kleks Academy’ [to w polskim tłumaczeniu angielski tytuł filmu – red.] could have been much more substantive, but as a family film it serves up magical moments, even if the direction is a bit lacking,” writes Daniel Hart from Ready Steady Cut, rating the production 2.5 out of 5 stars. In his review:

It’s better not to take ‘Kleks Academy’ too seriously, because it is rooted in children’s imagination. However, I am not convinced that director Maciej Kawulski was sure how seriously to treat this title. The Polish film, which premiered in December 2023, has the essence of children’s play, but the execution is not what it should be.

One viewer writes briefly: “This movie makes no sense at all”, which can be translated: “This movie makes no sense at all.” Another wonders whether “a teenager exploring the secrets of cinematography” was responsible for directing. Among the few opinions so far, there was also, among others: such as “an uplifting Netflix family film with bland humor” or a biting one: “Ah, ‘The Kleksa Academy’ – a fantastic journey to a world where even the most ordinary teenagers cannot escape the call of fate – and CGI.”

However, as is often the case, opinions are opinions, and popularity is what it is. It can be assumed that after the first partial week of screening around the world, “Kleks Academy” will probably be among the TOP10 most watched titles on Netflix – after all, children’s cinema very often appears on this list. Just 24 hours after its premiere, it is already the second most popular Netflix film in the world. And probably, just like among Polish viewers, the audience’s opinions will be divided. Not only Netflix provides us with many such examples.
