Barbara Nowacka said that the new reading list is ready and the changes to the school curriculum will be published by the end of June. However, the minister revealed which authors had been removed from the mandatory reading list. “I signed a document in which Mr. Rymkiewicz or Dukaj do not appear,” Nowacka announced and emphasized that the topic was now closed.

The decision was met with dissatisfaction from some groups. The journalist of “Rzeczypospolita” Michał Szułdrzyński accused people who removed famous authors from the reading list of incompetence. “She complained that there were no books from the 21st century on the list. And she crossed out the winner of the European Literature Award from 2008. It couldn’t be stupider,” he wrote on the X platform.
Jakub ¯ulczyk, one of the most widely read novel authors in Poland, also took part in the discussion. The writer emphasized that “the very existence of the canon of reading is evil”, which he has mentioned many times. “I consider the model of shaping civic attitudes through literature to be archaic and conservative, incompatible with the reality of 2024 AD,” notes the author of “Blinded by the Lights.”

“I don’t think that Rymkiewicz and Dukaj are authors that should be forced to be read, nor do I think that they are authors that are universally understandable to teenagers. Putting them into people’s heads at the high school stage – like Kafka, Schulz or Gombrowicz – may kill, but not rekindle the love for literature,” ¯ulczyk continues, but emphasizes that he is not defending Nowacka’s position.
“The ritual of crossing out subsequent names during subsequent changes of power is idiotic, it is like beating a drum around a campfire. The most disgusting thing about it, however, is the deprecation of literature. Czarnek did it, Nowacka is doing it now,” he adds. The writer did not like the dismissive description of Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz as “a certain Rymkiewicz”. “It is disgusting and only proves the cultural horizons of the ministry,” he writes on social media.
In his entry, Żulczyk mentioned Rymkiewicz’s achievements and emphasized that he quoted the author in the adaptation of one of his most read books. “I paid tribute to him in the script of the series ‘Blinded by the Lights’, Dario says with a quote from ‘Reytan’ when he asks whether it is better to eat shit or a glass. I do not live in Rymkiewicz’s toxic blood cult, but there is a terrifying, true Polishness. Next to Myśliwski, the greatest Polish author of the 20th century was not “somebody”, damn it.
