The Madrid Book Fairclosed last Sunday, this year ended with more than a million attendees and the sale of more than 585,000 books, but also with the worrying threat from the extreme right to some of the authors who came to sign copies in this edition.
This is what the organization itself has denounced when taking stock of the cultural event, in a statement in which they regret the “less friendly face” of its 83rd edition: “The threat of far-rightists to some of the authors and authors who have signed during the 17 days” and who, they regret, “has been a cause of concern during this year’s successful edition.
In the same note, the organization highlights that “the management of the Fair has been in permanent contact and coordinated with the forces of public order to guarantee its protection” and conveys “publicly its defense of this cultural event of general interest as space of freedom in which this type of behavior has no place“.
Among the authors who have suffered these threats is the journalist Antonio Maestrewho reported last week in Al Rojo Vivo that he had to sign “with three members of the organization’s security and an infiltrated colleague” because “there were serious threats for security.” A situation, he denounced, that “cannot be normalized“.
