The public will hear for the first time this Thursday, June 20, Saturrarana contemporary opera composed by the musician Juan Carlos Pérez (Itoiz, the solo album Hau berua…) with a libretto in Basque written by Kirmen Uribe. The play, produced by the Arriaga Theater and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, will be performed on June 20 (7:30 p.m.) and June 22 (8:00 p.m.) at the Bilbao theater.
Lucía Astigarraga signs the stage direction of this opera, which highlights the dreamlike section evoked by the libretto written in Basque by Kirmen Uribe. The show is performed in Basque, and with subtitles in Spanish and English.
Jon Malaxetxebarria is in charge of the musical direction of Saturraranand conducting the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa (BOS) and the eight solo voices of the opera, a vocal cast headed by Elías Arranz and Andrea Jiménez, accompanied by Marifé Nogales, José Manuel Díaz, Botond Ódor, Aitor Garitano, Itxaro Mentxaka and Iñigo Fernández.
The opera composed by Juan Carlos Pérez also requires the participation of more than 40 choralists from the Bilbao Choral Society, who will perform under the direction of Enrique Azurza.
Saturraran It is, as they explain from the Arriaga, the story of two women who cannot love each other. In the 80s, Ane, the daughter of a deep-sea fisherman, and Luna, an Andalusian who arrived in a van, fall in love with each other. Caught by the whirlwind of heroin and, feeling the rejection of their neighbors, they decide to take refuge in the ruins of the Saturraran prison. José, Ane’s widowed father, will try to help them. The difficulty of accepting what is different, the onslaught of heroin and AIDS, the decline of the fishing world… Saturraran is “a tribute to the lost generation that taught us to be free.”
The story is supported by the legend that says that the two large rocks on Saturraran beach are two lovers. Society did not allow them to love each other, and they drowned in the water. Later, two large rocks emerged from the sea, in his memory.
Tickets are on sale for a price between 20 and 42 euros.
