Swimsuits in the times of the Polish People’s Republic, contrary to appearances, were not so different from those worn today. Especially considering the fact that vintage clothes are coming back into fashion. However, it’s hard to say that the costumes were the same. There were differences, although not necessarily in the cut itself.
What did swimsuits look like in the times of the Polish People’s Republic? It was controversial
The main difference is, of course, availability. Today, we can easily buy a swimsuit in any color and style in a store. In the past, beach products were not so easily available. For this reason, many people decided to wear ordinary underwear that they wore every day. Women appeared in bras and panties, men in briefs, and children in T-shirts, panties or completely naked. Today, this last variant is especially controversial. In the Polish People’s Republic? Normal.
However, things became controversial when these ordinary underwear lost in the fight against the water element. Cotton panties were particularly problematic as they fit rather loosely on the hips and combined with the sea waves, it was a recipe for laughter and giggles – at least under one’s breath. The development of the production of spandex (today called Lycra or elastane) gave greater peace of mind to victims of falling underwear. This synthetic material began to be added to swimsuits, thanks to which they fit better to the body and did not drift alone among the waves.

Did women only wear full-length dresses in the Polish People’s Republic?
As for the appearance of the costumes, they were indeed similar to today’s. However, they were not that elegant. Sequins or lace were rarely seen. The work was done rather by the patterns and colors of the fabrics, or possibly the ruffles. Men wore short swimming trunks or shorts, and women wore one-piece suits or bras and panties. However, there is a difference when it comes to the latter.
In the times of the Polish People’s Republic, you didn’t see bras made of two triangles with strings attached. Just like panties that reveal more than they cover. A thong was definitely out of the question. On the contrary, high-waisted panties played the main role. You could also see the most ordinary panties, or ones with a slightly higher waist.
