Euskaraz irakurri: Bloñ, errealismo magiko sonikoa

The estimable cycle Domekak Hori Bain had proposed the appointment for this spring expiration Sunday in the Larrabetzu gaztetxe: the Bajo Navarrese sextet Bloñpresenting his album Kantuz bathtub (2021).

Fifty people accepted the invitation, and joined the musical celebration of the project based on the soundtrack of the web series Banyoletwinner of the third call for the Durangoko Azoka Creation Grant that has also been seen in feature film format. Banyolet is directed and written by Paxkal Irigoyen Etxeberri (Ainhize-Monjolose, 1988) and Maia Iribarne Olhagari (Lasa, 1995), filmed with the inhabitants of the Garazi region, and the music from this series is what articulates the album and Bloñ’s live shows. Irigoyen themselves (guitar, voice) and Iribarne lead the sextet on stage.

As in the imaginary world of Banyolet, everything has a place in the musical proposal of the sextet: the web series contains, for example, symbolism, surrealism and reflections on emancipation and innocence; Jazz, rock, some progressive touches, funk, gentle pop and even post hardcore coexist in the group’s musical catalog. Of everything, from the most delicate caress to the most vigorous shake.

The songs “Kikerak” and “50” opened this Sunday’s concert, as they do with the album Kantuz bathtub, after an introduction to six voices and two zambombas. The cards are on the table, from the beginning: worked and syncopated drum rhythms (commendable, the work of Nicolas Armendariz); breaths between note and note (not playing is also playing); rich guitar chords; simple keyboard and guitar arrangements; bass lines providing tensions; ups and downs in intensity; and, above all, the privileged voice of Iribarne.

The third and fourth songs of the night served to illustrate the value of that voice: Irigoyen and Iribarne, alone on stage, performed the delicate “Eihera” and “Zauri” in one of the highlights of the concert.

But Bloñ knows how to combine, as we have said, delicacy and strength; the song “Erbiak”, next in the repertoire, for example, is a clear example of this. This great song combines sounds and fun funk rhythms with riffs that inevitably refer us to Fugazi and invite us to nod, and offers a new possibility for Armendariz to demonstrate his virtues by making a song not only walk and work, but also shine. .

The audience continued for a total of an hour, guided by Bloñ’s songs, their journey through the dreamlike and unreal universes of Bañolet, punctuated by magical realism also present in the series and delimited by diffuse borders, with a version by Bjork to say goodbye included, until the chords stopped and everyone stepped onto solid ground again.

Whoever wants to discover or return to Bañolet with Bloñ will be able to do so on June 30 at the EHZ festival.
