The success of ‘Soldiers of Salamis’ promoted its international projection and his works have been translated into more than thirty languages in more than twenty countries. With that ability to play with reality and fiction he later wrote ‘Anatomy of an Instant’ (2009), ‘The Laws of the Border’ (2012), ‘The Impostor’ (2014) and ‘The Monarch of Shadows’ ( 2017), which denote Cercas’ interest in the Spanish Civil War and the Transition.

The writer presented himself as the only candidate to occupy the vacancy of chair R that Javier Marías left behind. Despite having been endorsed by authors of the stature of Mario Vargas Llosa, as mentioned a few lines above, his arrival had to be voted on this Thursday. A vote in which he has achieved the absolute majority necessary to be a member of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) in that position.
