Snails are the nightmare of every gardener. These voracious molluscs make themselves felt especially in late spring and summer, when they begin to invade freshly sown grass, budding or blooming flowers or fresh seedlings. They will be happy with literally anything: grass, leaves, stems, flower buds and petals, tubers, roots, vegetables and fruit. They come out to feed at night and in just a few hours they can turn a garden into a battlefield. The worst from the point of view of gardeners and gardeners are snails, i.e. snails without a shell.
What to do if uninvited guests appear in our garden? Of course, in stores you will find a whole range of chemical products that will effectively repel them. However, they have some drawbacks. They cost a lot and may pose a threat to other plants, insects or animals that are useful in the garden.
Therefore, many experts advise you to first try home, ecological and safe methods for dealing with snails. It is widely popular to sprinkle ground spices around the seedlings, the intense smell of which repels snails – e.g. cinnamon. Coffee grounds are also effective because caffeine is deadly to snails. These troublesome invertebrates also dislike rough and dry surfaces, so spreading gravel or egg shells around the plants is effective.
Are snails eating your plants? The expert has a foolproof method. “All the leaves are perfect”
Similar advice was shared on TikTok by an expert who became known as a “gardening guru” online. Growing plants is his great passion, with which he tries to “infect” others. Internet users love his tips, so this time they were delighted with the useful tip. “Mr. Spock”, because this was his nickname on TikTok, confessed that “he had a problem with snails on dahlias for years.”
Now look at them, he said, showing the flowers to the camera. – All the leaves are really perfect because I use chives! – he added. The man planted chives around his plants because snails cannot tolerate the substance they secrete, called allicin. This compound gives the characteristic smell of onions and helps plants fight bacteria.
Snails hate chives, so plant them with your plants
– advised the specialist. But it is not everything. He shared with Internet users another “trick” that effectively deters voracious intruders. He recommended preparing your own ecological snail repellent.
How to get rid of snails in the garden?
It’s a very simple solution. To prepare the preparation yourself, all you need are products that you probably already have at home. If not, we will spend a few zlotys on them at most. Will be needed:
- 2 cloves of fresh garlic
- water (1 liter)
How to prepare a snailicide? Crush the garlic cloves in a press, mix them in a liter of water and pour the resulting “mixture” into a spray bottle. Then we spray it around the plants that fall victim to snails. These mollusks do not like the intense smell of garlic, so they will avoid the sprayed places. This remedy will also work against other persistent insects.
Internet users really liked the recipe for “garlic water”. “It helped me a lot!” – some wrote. “Great idea! I use garlic water,” another person revealed in a post under the gardener’s video.
ADVICE! “Garlic water” is effective, but you can also use homemade snail traps. For example, the beer trap is very popular. To make it, of course, we need the mentioned drink and a jar or a plastic bottle with a slippery and smooth opening. Fill the jar 3/4 with beer and stick it into the ground so that its edge is flush with the ground. Pour some beer into the bottle and place it near the seedlings. The sweet smell of the drink will attract snails, which will fall into the trap, which we can empty in the morning, away from our garden.
