The film with Figura was an unexpected hit on Netflix, the actress is difficult to recognize. Critics: It’s a waste of her talent

From the day of its premiere, the film “Colors of Evil: Red” remains number one in Poland. The production is not inferior to any other novelty. In recent days, another Netflix film – “Sharks in the Seine” – has climbed to second place on the list, and the podium is closed by the cinema hit “Too Big for Fairy Tales 2”.

But this is not the end of Polish titles that have attracted the attention of domestic viewers in recent days. Fifth place in the Netflix Top List is “Christening”, a comedy from 2022 directed by Jakub Skoczeń. “December, 1981. Marianna, a devout Catholic, decides to use a family celebration – the baptism of her youngest grandson – to reconcile her children, who have been quarreling for years. She is unexpectedly prevented from doing so by General Jaruzelski, who declares martial law that day. Wanting to complete the family reconciliation, Marianna decides to hide the truth about the situation in the country from the children. This seemingly small lie will trigger an avalanche of unexpected events that will be difficult to stop,” we read in the description of the film’s plot.

Filmweb users rated the production 6.2 out of 10 stars. Critics were a bit harsher on the film – 5.6 stars. “The goal – adapting to economic trends – could have been achieved if the creators had added something interesting of their own to the mix. Meanwhile, we have a gallop of well-used ideas, overused conflicts and poor plot tropes. It’s a pity, because the cinematography and acting are really good” – Michał Piepiórka from Czas Kultury wrote about the production.

Karolina Korwin Piotrowska also shares this opinion. “There were many similar stories, there is nothing original here, but Figura is absolutely fantastic,” said the critic. “We have seen, heard, known such families in the cinema ad nauseum – nothing new under the Polish sun. It’s a pity that Figura’s talent was cast here unnecessarily” – added Adriana Prodeus from “Vogue”.

Katarzyna Figura underwent a huge transformation for her role, but in an interview with Angelika Swoboda for weekend.gazeta.pl she emphasized that she and Marianna had something in common. “Marianna’s determination is very close to me as a woman. It results from atavistic, primal motherly strength,” emphasized Figura, who is sometimes difficult to recognize on screen.
