The cause of his death was poisoning with a drug that his partner had sneakily administered to him. She hoped – later posing as his wife – to inherit an impressive sum of money. However, this never happened, and Kenoyer will now go to prison. It turned out that the alleged inheritance was one big fraud – foreign media report.
On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, the woman pleaded guilty. The 47-year-old now faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, we read in People.com. Let us recall that the woman was arrested in October last year. Investigators then determined that the American was motivated by “financial motives.” Her 51-year-old partner died in one of the suburban hospitals after unknowingly taking poison.
Investigators also determined that the 51-year-old intended to end his relationship with Ina Thea. On September 3, 2023, the man was going to the airport with his friends to meet with a lawyer regarding his allegedly newly acquired property. According to the investigation files, the man complained of abdominal pain. His friends, in turn, testified that he seemed drunk, although blood tests did not show the presence of alcohol in his system. Then he started vomiting. He also couldn’t walk.

Ina Thea Kenoyer, who has medical training, claimed the man had suffered a stroke. However, investigators did not believe her explanation as they learned that she had previously discussed her plan to poison her partner with someone. In addition, they found an empty bottle of the drug she used in their home. Then tests were performed which showed a deadly toxin in his body.
The 47-year-old tried to take over matters related to documents regarding her alleged assets. She argued that she wanted to share the inheritance with Steven’s 21-year-old son. However, when she learned that no inheritance was an option – the American was not Riley’s wife – she was said to be “outraged” – we read on foreign portals.
In the end, however, it turned out that the entire inheritance was most likely a scam, reports the Minot Daily News. The murdered man’s 21-year-old son, Ryan Riley, claimed that both his father and stepmother were “scammed by a stranger” on the Internet and “there was never any inheritance.”
It was a fraud
– he said in an interview with “The New York Post”. The 21-year-old added that his family never saw the money in question with their own eyes. Ryan claimed his father received an email from someone claiming to be a lawyer for “a distant relative of theirs” who arranged a meeting with him at the airport. However, no one showed up at the scene.
– (…) He was convinced that he had inherited the money and would receive it as soon as this alleged lawyer landed, the 21-year-old said in an interview with The New York Post. – But the supposed lawyer never showed up. It was a fraud (…) – summed up the young man. According to the Minot Daily News, defendant Ina Thea Kenoyer is scheduled to receive her final sentencing on Wednesday, August 14.
