They played a concert together, then there was an accident. Krawczyk felt guilty for his death for years

Over four decades ago, Krzysztof Klenczon died in a tragic car accident while returning home from a charity concert. For years, Krzysztof Krawczyk, who appeared on stage with him on the fateful day, blamed himself for the death of the musician, and privately a good friend.

To this day, he is considered one of the most outstanding composers in the domestic music industry. He started his career in the first half of the 1960s, but his real popularity came only when he became a leader and guitarist. He composed many timeless hits for the band, such as “Flowers in the Hair”, “The Story of One Friendship” or “White Cross”, which was the last song he sang live.

The charity concert was the last in Krzysztof Klenczon’s life. The artist died in a car accident

After leaving the band, the artist and his family emigrated to the United States, where he continued his career. Not only did he create new songs, but he also regularly performed for the audience. On February 25, 1981, he appeared at the Milford Club in Chicago to take part in a charity concert. He had previously intended to resign from participating because he had a cold, but due to the nature of the event he decided to take part in it. After leaving the stage, he exchanged a few words, including: with Krzysztof Krawczyk, and then, accompanied by his wife Alicja, he decided to return home. At that time, no one expected that a tragedy would occur a few hours later.

On the way back, Klenczon was sleeping and his wife was driving. Suddenly he woke up and offered to replace her. – Krzysztof seemed to wake up, shouting at me that we were changing and he would continue driving. Maybe 2-3 minutes later I saw the headlights of a car speeding towards us. I heard a bang and didn’t remember anything else – a woman.

The yellow Mustang they were riding in was hit by a drunk driver. The musician’s wife was not seriously injured, but he was taken to hospital in critical condition. Although he was immediately operated on, his life could not be saved. He died after 40 days in a coma, on April 7, 1981. He was 39 years old.

Krawczyk couldn’t recover from Klenczon’s death. He struggled with guilt for years

The death of Krzysztof Klenczon plunged his beloved wife and two daughters into mourning, as well as the entire artistic community. He was particularly moved and even sang “Ave Maria” for him during the funeral ceremony. In interviews, he repeatedly emphasized that he felt guilty about his death. Of course, he didn’t contribute to it in any way, but he felt guilty that they didn’t talk longer. He was convinced that if Klenczon had left the club later, he would not have encountered a drunk driver and would still be alive. – I had to go to bed sooner because I was picking up my family from the airport in the morning. And we broke up. Maybe if we had sat longer, Krzysiek wouldn’t have left at that hour and the accident wouldn’t have happened – unfortunately. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.
