The cult adaptation of “Nights and Days” directed by Jerzy Antczak was a real gateway to the film industry for Jerzy Biñczycki. Many decades after the premiere, it turned out that the actor was not the first candidate for Bogumił Niechcic. Which star was supposed to get this role?

The film adaptation, directed by Maria Dąbrowska, is considered one of the greatest in the history of Polish cinematography. The film premiered in September 1975, and the story of the two-generation Niechcic family quickly won the hearts of viewers and gained critical acclaim. Over the years, she has been honored with such prestigious awards as the Golden Lion and the Silver Bear, and even received an Oscar nomination.

Antczak was inspired to adapt the novel to the screen by his wife, who played the role of Barbara Niechcic. – I had no idea that the whole thing was worth attention – in “Fakt” after many years. On the screen, she created an unforgettable duet with , who had already played roles in productions such as “Janosik”, “Salt of the Black Earth” and “Family Life”.

He convinced the director to accept his candidacy with his outstanding performance in the play “The Fiends” and finally received the role of Bogumił Niechcic without taking part in test shots. – Mr. Director, I am not suitable for this film – he was reported to have said. – I burned all the test photos. It was decided that I was not suitable for films – he added, but Antczak saw the potential hidden in it and did not intend to give it up.

Years after the premiere of “Nights and Days”, it turned out that Bińczycki was not the first candidate for the role of Bogumił. When Antczak started assembling the cast, he suggested it to Stanisław Jasiukiewicz, whose role as Urlich von Jungingen in According to the Vision brought him popularity. Although he initially agreed, he resigned just days before going on set. The reason for this decision was his deteriorating health condition, as the actor was struggling with pancreatic cancer, from which he died at the end of June 1973.

Jasiuk’s extraordinary integrity and loyalty made him protect me from a disaster, because he could have left during the production of the film.
