Viggo Mortensen Will Return as Aragorn in ‘The Hunt for Gollum’?
“The Hunt for Gollum” is scheduled to hit theaters in 2026. The production is once again handled by Peter Jackson along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens – the trio that created the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” film trilogy years ago. Little is known about the new title, but the hunt for Gollum – according to the literary original – should refer to the times between “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”. And this means that we can see many well-known faces on the screens, as long as the actors decide to reprise their roles.
Aragorn is one such character. The guard had been tracking Gollum for many months, and his plot could probably be included in a film about the hunt for the creature. Viggo Mortensen himself has absolutely not ruled out his participation. In an interview with “” he said whether he would be interested in returning to the set and what conditions he had for it to happen:
Of course (“I would consider returning to the role of Aragorn” – editor’s note). I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard it yet. I liked playing this character. I learned a lot then and I really liked it. I would agree, provided that it would be in line with, for example, my current age and the character itself. It would be foolish to do anything else, he confessed.
“The Hunt for Gollum” – what is already known?
Andy Serkis will be involved again in “The Hunt for Gollum”. He will not only be Gollum, but also one of the directors. This time the film will not be a trilogy – it will consist of two parts. It is possible that we will again see other actors playing characters known from Tolkien’s books. Not only Aragorn, but also Gandalf and the elves of Mirkwood took part in the hunt for Gollum. The involvement of Ian McKellen (Gandalf) in the project is probably questionable due to the actor’s age, but Orlando Bloom and Lee Pace (Legolas and Thranduil) could successfully return to Middle-earth.
The hunt for Gollum began shortly after Gandalf discovered how valuable the ring Bilbo found in Moria really was. The search lasts many months, Gollum is tracked from Moria to the Vale of Morgul on the outskirts of Mordor.
