A gift for a teenager on Children’s Day? We choose books

Young Adult, Scandinavian literature, or maybe something for fans of Minecraft and Roblox? Here are our book suggestions for teenagers. Not only for Children’s Day.

Ryszard Kozik (I read it): “Tsatsiki and Alva” Moni Nilsson (Nooks) is the eighth and last book about Tsatsiki, who is entering his teenage years. However, you can read it without knowing the previous ones. In the sixth grade, not only mathematics becomes more difficult, but also relationships – both with peers and adults Tsatsiki’s longing for Alva, who stayed in Greece, misunderstandings with Per Hammar, seeing his unhappy Mom and more and more pimples on his nose, don’t help Tsatsiki means love and true friendship. To achieve this, he will have to break many rules. Many old secrets will also be revealed…

Anna Kowal (I read it): “Time is running out” Sarah Crossan (Two Sisters) is a story about brotherhood and a shocking voice against the death penalty. Joe and Ed are brothers, but they haven’t seen each other for ten years. Since Ed ran away from home, his aunt made sure they had no contact. For Joe’s sake , that’s what she said. So that he doesn’t go the wrong way like his older brother. But now comes the news that changes everything – Seventeen-year-old Joe goes to Texas to visit his brother in prison. for appeals and motions, for conversations… and to say goodbye. But this time is enough for Joe to become an adult, to learn to forgive – and to love.

Marta Korycka (marta_korycka_): “Reapers” from the series “The Harvest of Death” by Neal Shusterman (Urobos) is not entirely new, because in Poland volume 1 was published last year, but until now I had missed its popularity. Meanwhile, at the International Book Fair in Warsaw, I had never seen such queue (not only of teenagers) waiting for an autograph. I found out that people stood there for over 4.5 hours, and the writer signed books even after the event closed, because – as he said – he remembers the times when no one was in the queue for his signature. steel.

So I start reading because it looks extremely promising. In the world created by Shusterman, there is no hunger, disease, war or poverty. Humanity has even conquered death. Only the reapers, chosen from among teenagers, can decide about the end of someone’s life. And these two – Citra and Rowan – are selected.

Unwind. Divided. Volume 1” by the same author is a story whose description is enough to give you goosebumps. After a long and bloody Second Civil War, the armies of pro-life and pro-choice people reached an agreement and the “Pro-Life Act” was passed, protecting human existence from the moment conception until the age of thirteen. However, between the thirteenth and eighteenth birthdays, the parent could decide to “split” his child. Then his body parts and organs are sent for transplantation. The main characters here are three teenagers intended for “splitting” who manage to escape from the transport and who must survive until her 18th birthday.

Richard: “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” by Jeff Kinney (Nasza Księgarnia) is one of the most popular series for older children/younger teenagers. The latest volume is titled “Head Works”. Greg’s middle school is not having the best of times. The results of the national test are a failure, to put it mildly, with a basketball mascot the team is left with… the Chlapek toilet, and the school changes its name to STINK WORMS. The life of students is not easy. Maybe it would be better if only the brains went to classes and the owners would just pick them up after classes. Be sure to check if this idea can work? .

Marta: In a similar atmosphere, Our Bookstore also has “Worst week of my life” by Eva Amores and Matt Gosgrove. Now Wednesday has been published. Humor, lots of illustrations, multiple fonts and adventures.

And if your teenagers prefer a dark atmosphere, maybe it’s worth reaching for “Basilisk”? However, I am not talking about the old legend, but the new book by Bettina Kleinszig “Basilisk. The amazing adventures of Bastian Zekoff” (Period). This is the story of two friends who one day find themselves in the basement of the house they both live in. It’s not what they expected… Readers will find here references to legends, a bit of history and a mystery.

Anna: “Our worlds” by Claudia Moonever (Books4YA) draws you into their fantastic world from the very first pages. Ian and Suzy work in the Between Worlds Travel Agency and lead a rather calm and orderly life. Everything changes when they are both accused of crimes they did not commit. The heroes must prove their innocence, but to do this they must repair their axes of events. So they set out on a journey through many universes – some of them are friendly to them, others are on the contrary, and in each of them they will meet different Ians and other Suzys that connect them them in other worlds, are different, although the axis of events that connects them all means that some things happen in all universes, although sometimes they take different forms (accidents, diseases, etc.) and then safely return to your universe.

Marta: And the heroes “Drakes in the Antipodes” Katarzyna Ryrych (Harper Kids) have one, theoretically ordinary world. Kostek, Draka, Police and Art track down secrets during the holidays, have fun and… grow up. The story about friendship was awarded in the 6th Astrid Lindgren Literary Competition for a contemporary fairy tale for children and teenagers.

Ryszard: Do you have Minecraft and Roblox fans at home? I have some suggestions for book gifts for them from Harper Kids. “Mobs in the forest manor. Minecraft. Reading mode” by Nick Eliopulos is the fifth part of the “Reading Mode” series. This time Emmy and Birch visit the forest manor. The second proposition is “Minecraft. Would you rather? Polish edition” by Thomas McBrien. Is it better to be in the middle of nowhere in the middle of winter with one biscuit, or in the dark with one torch? Is it better to be a bee with the wings of an Ender Dragon, or an Ender Dragon with bee wings? Alex and Steve try to solve over 50 dilemmas from the world of Minecraft. “Minecraft. Golem game” by Nick Eliopulos is the fifth book in the “Stonesword Saga” series of novels. Morgan is a great player, but he feels his leadership of the team is slipping from his hands when another shard of the Summoner King takes the form of a golem and tests the players of the team. “Minecraft. Beginner’s guide” – the title says it all. Are your kids just starting to play Minecraft? From this book they will learn everything they need to know to learn the game in survival and creative modes. Book “Minecraft. A mine of projects. Recreate the real world in Minecraft” by Thomas McBrien will ignite the imagination of young players! It will contain over 70 ideas for breathtaking projects inspired by the world around us.

In the book “Roblox. Guide. The best games on the platform” practical information, hints, tips and tricks relating to the strategies of individual games were collected. The following games were discussed: Blox Fruits, Natural Disaster Survival, Mad City, Hide and Seek Extreme and My Restaurant. Finally “Roblox. A gamer’s essential” Described here include: obstacle courses, racing games, simulators, survival games, tycoons and clickers, to action-packed games, as well as those with thrills and a hint of horror!

Anna: Maybe I’ll suggest a few young adult novels at the end.

At the beginning of “Where can you hear the whispers?” Kate Pearsall (Books4YA). What happened last summer? Why did all the memories disappear and what remained was only a scar and a feeling of anxiety at the sight of a dark forest and nightmares that return after dark? When a teenager dies in a quiet town, Tilia knows she must overcome fear and face the demons of the past. Fortunately, she can count on the support of her loving sisters and the extraordinary powers that the women in her family derive from closeness to nature. However, there are secrets that should never be discovered…

The second proposition is “The Reunion” Kit Frick (HarperYA). The divided Mayweather family wants to spend the winter break together in Cancun, Mexico. The opportunity to meet is the engagement of Addison’s mother and Mason to Theo’s father. Eleven of them went on vacation, but only ten will return home… During the family reunion, it turns out that everyone has their secrets and old grudges will lead to tragedy. When a murder occurs, everyone is a suspect…

The third novel is “The Song’s You’ve Never Heard” Becky Jerams and Ellie Wyatt (HarperYA). Meg is a popular influencer that every company wants to sponsor, all thanks to her brother Caspar, a pop star. At first glance, she doesn’t need anything else to be happy. However, the girl is constantly compared to her brother and harassed by online haters. She hides her love and talent for music. Her opposite is Alana, who is not afraid to stand out and share her work. When the girls meet, despite their differences, they quickly discover that they have a common passion…

And yet “Yolk” Mary HK Choi (Young). Jayne and June Beak have nothing in common. June is three years older, loves to control everything, has a boring job and an apartment without a soul (according to Jayne). Jayne cannot cope with emotions, according to June should finally focus on her studies and stop wasting her parents’ money. They used to be very close, but now they are connected only by their origins and living in the same city. However, when June becomes ill, only Jayne will be able to help her. Will the sisters become closer again? ?

Marta: And let me mention a theoretically quite unusual gift idea, but maybe it’s worth considering? Boguś Janiszewski and Max Skorwider have already delighted my son, among others: “Politics” and “Economics” from the series “What adults don’t tell you”, and now the Agora publishing house for children has published “A book about drugs, Nieporadnik“. “Psychoactive substances are among us, and scaring them alone does not work. It’s time to change the narrative!” – writes Natalia Juszczak, psychologist, addiction psychotherapy specialist. It’s worth taking a look.
