The disaster of the British transatlantic liner, which went to the bottom after colliding with an iceberg, inspired James Cameron to create a production that is considered one of the greatest in the history of cinema. Although the cast of “Titanic” included hundreds of actors and extras, only one person was alive when the tragic events took place.

When the Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912, no one even thought that in a few days a tragedy would occur that would change the course of history forever. On the night of April 14-15, the British Olympic-class ship, which had a reputation for being unsinkable, collided with a massive iceberg. However, the event was not without significance, because as a result of damage to the hull, water began to enter the deck and the ship began to sink. Ultimately, it sank to the bottom, resulting in the death of more than 1,500 passengers.

The Titanic disaster inspired James Cameron. This is how one of the most iconic films in the history of cinema was created

More than 80 years after the disaster, an American director became interested in the topic and decided to honor the memory of the victims by creating a film. Already at the stage of creating the script, he knew that the main plot would be the story of unhappy love between Rose DeWitt Bukater, who comes from an aristocratic family, and the emigrant Jack Dawson, and the tragic events were only their background. The main roles were played by Kate Winslet, but they were accompanied by a galaxy of Hollywood’s biggest stars and hundreds of extras. It turns out that out of such a large cast, only one person was alive at the time when the tragic events took place.

She was the only person on the set of Titanic who was alive at the time of the ship disaster. How old was she then?

The Titanic disaster was witnessed by Gloria Stuart, who played Rose at a ripe old age. For her role, she was even nominated for an award in the Best Supporting Actress category. Thus, she went down in history as the oldest person to receive this distinction, she was 87 years old at the time.

The actress was born on July 4, 1910 in Santa Monica, California, so she was less than 2 years old when the tragedy occurred. In interviews, she emphasized that she didn’t remember much about the sinking of the ship, but the topic was not alien to her at all. The tragedy touched all her family members, who often discussed what happened then and how many people lost their lives. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.
