Agata: First up – Garfield. I’m going to smoke it straight away. I apologize in advance to anyone who may be offended, but Garfield cannot be adapted into a film. First, movie characters are generally required to move. And Garfield is a fat and very lazy cat who, by definition, doesn’t move. Because he’s sleeping. And when he doesn’t sleep, he eats. Or he sleeps while eating. Would you like to watch a sleeping cat for an hour and a half? There have been many attempts to adapt Garfield into a film, both fictional and animated, but as unconvinced as I was, I will remain unconvinced. Even when he speaks in Bill Murray’s voice.
Long weekend at the cinema. What to look for?
Justyna: “Stuntman” looks more than promising for a number of reasons. First of all, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt play the main roles – they are simply professionals and they have great on-screen chemistry. Secondly, the director is David Leitch. This is the guy who made the deliciously packed film “Atomic Blonde”, full of truly impressive fight scenes and an even better soundtrack, starring Charlize Theron, who was rampaging through East and West Berlin and played an extremely effective female spy. Definitely one of the best films in this genre. What’s more, Leitch also recently released the gleefully explosive and shoot-and-kick “Bullet Train” starring Brad Pitt, which is also great entertainment.
Agata: If the reference is “Atomic Blonde” and “Bullet Train”, then I don’t really need anything else. I’m going to buy tickets.
Justyna: This director perfectly mixes action with infectious humor, and Ryan Gosling feels like a fish out of water in this formula. “Stuntman” allows him to go crazy on various fronts: firstly, he can make absolute jokes with a straight face as situational jokes, secondly, the trailer shows that he had a lot of fun with scenes in which, for example, he bursts into flames and jumps on a flying plane. helicopter, jumps from high floors and chases with fast cars.
What’s more, the team also broke the Guinness World Record by filming 8.5 rollovers for the film. Plot? And with attractions like these, who cares?
Agata: Sure, it just gets in the way.
Justyna: Just kidding: a former stuntman returns to the industry to star in a big-budget movie for his ex-girlfriend, whom he wants to win back. Things get complicated and he has to go in search of the main star of the film. An additional plus is that there is a dog to which Ryan Gosling fastens a seat belt in the car and promises him a drink. And then he actually goes to the bar with that dog.
Justyna: If someone likes car chases, post-apocalyptic and desert atmospheres, heavy trucks and crazy motorcycles, they should watch the latest “Mad Max”. “Furiosa” is a film that you can easily watch even if you don’t know the other five productions from the cult universe, although theoretically it is a prequel presenting the fate of the heroine, whom viewers fell in love with after the Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road” from 2015. Here we learn what events shaped the titular Furiosa. This time she is played by Anya Taylor-Joy and she does it very admirably. This girl can act with just her eyes. An interesting fact is that before participating in the production, she could not drive a car and had to learn how to do so. In one of the interviews, she even laughed that although she doesn’t know how to park in parallel, she can, by braking, turn the car so that it stops in the marked position between the posts.
Apart from her, Chris Hemsworth with a glued-on nose is absolutely charming. It’s true that he looks a bit like Mr. Kleks, who was injured by a global nuclear disaster, but that doesn’t bother him that much. Although the dummy on his face is unconvincing, he does a much better job as an actor: he is alternately diabolical and unpredictable, funny and comic, sometimes even downright tragic. I’m not saying that the film as a whole is outstanding, because it has its flaws, but it’s a really solid average film that doesn’t hurt while watching it.
Agata: And changing the mood – what about “One Life”? There’s a strong story there and Anthony Hopkins. So it’s actually a certainty. We have the story of Sir Nicholas Winton, who saved 669 children from the hands of the Nazis. A clip of a BBC program about Winton went viral, not surprisingly. Today we would say it’s “strong stuff.”
Justyna: This is definitely a film you need to go to the cinema with a pack of tissues because you will shed tears of emotion. Anna Stupnicka-Bando, a doctor and president of the Polish Society of Righteous Among the Nations, highly praises the production and emphasizes that as many people as possible should watch it. There is no arguing with such opinions.
Agata: Now that it’s serious, it means we’re moving on to…
Justyna: “Pooh: Blood and Honey 2”. It’s something I can’t take seriously, although the trailer shows that the creators approached the horror concept with full dedication. The first part has a cheerfully low rating of three percent from film critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a more gracious 50 percent. from viewers. The second part is apparently much better, because it received 53% from the reviewers and 80% from the audience. positive opinions.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is a production that is intended to destroy our childhood. Pooh is not a sweet teddy bear, but rather a bloodthirsty mutant who, together with Tigger, Piglet, Mr. Owl and the rest of the company, murders left and right. They want to get KrzyĆ, as well as all the surviving participants of the birthday party from years ago. And in fact, more people die in various painful and visually impressive ways. I don’t know yet whether it’s a “so bad it’s good” movie, but the convention certainly allows us to take the overall view into account.
Agata: It’s time to head for shore. I haven’t seen “Tomorrow Will Be Ours” yet. And I feel like I have to make up for it. The film is black and white and in Italian. No car chases in the desert, no murderous stuffed animals and no animated cat. Instead, we have an everyday treadmill, patriarchy, mother and daughter, and a father – a classic women’s boxer. All this together resulted in a great hit in Italy and delight of viewers and critics. I’m going. And I’ll take my mother.
Justyna: “Hit Man” is worth watching just because it was directed by Richard Linklater, famous for “Boyhood.” This is, mind you, a comedy about a hitman. What’s more, the character the main character was based on actually existed. The film tells the story of Gary Johnson (Glen Powell), a philosophy professor who supplements his teaching salary in a rather unusual way. That is, he and the police are looking for people who hire paid killers. At some stage, he even begins to pretend to be the hitman himself and decides to make a real art out of it. And then a woman shows up and things get complicated. I’ve read the reviews and I know from them that “Hit Man” captivates with its “brilliance, humor and fast-paced action.” This convinces me to invest two hours of my life.
Agata: So it looks like we already have plans for the weekend.
