Valuable coins include both those that have been put into circulation and those that have never been officially used. Their value is influenced by many factors, ranging from condition to the number of examples that left the mint. The most valuable coins from the times of the Polish People’s Republic. Collectors are rubbing their hands
they enjoy special sentiment. This applies not only to banknotes but also to coins. Not all pieces have collector’s value. A lot of details matter, from quality, year of production to place of minting. Sometimes even a small detail increases the value even several times. An example would be trial coins that never entered circulation and only a few or a dozen pieces left the mint.
This includes: a trial coin with the image of Tadeusz Kościuszko with a face value of PLN 10, which at auctions reaches values of up to several thousand zlotys. Only 5 pieces were minted, but more common coins can also be found at numismatic auctions. This is, for example, a 5-zloty coin from 1958 with the image of a fisherman, which today costs approximately PLN 700-900. A zloty with a laurel branch from 1957, although minted in 800 million pieces, can cost several hundred zlotys, provided that it does not have any blemishes and is in perfect condition.

This is the most expensive coin from the times of the Polish People’s Republic. Her story is quite mysterious
However, the real record holder is a 10-cent coin from 1973 without a mint mark. This is the only circulation coin from that time (although these particular pieces were never officially circulated), which today can cost up to several dozen thousand zlotys. In May 2023, it was sold for EUR 8,577 (today, i.e. in 2024, it is over PLN 36,000)! Where does this price come from?
In 1973, 10-grosz coins were minted at the Warsaw mint and at the Slovak mint in Kremnica. The former were put into circulation, the latter, without a mint mark, theoretically never reached Poland in the 1970s, probably because the needs were sufficiently met by the Warsaw mint. Theoretically, because since the 1990s, these coins have been appearing at auctions more and more often. Where did they come from? presented a theory according to which in the 1990s, Kremnica, while cleaning the mint’s warehouses, simply sold the minted 10-cent coins, and the coins then went to collectors.
