Just a few days after removal, the plant often begins to grow back. – The rhizomes of Japanese knotweed, like those of other knotweed plants, are characterized by rapid growth, extending to a distance of 5-7 m to even 20 m from the mother plant – we learn from the GDOŚ website.

Knotweed in the garden. What can we do when it appears?

Professor Zbigniew Wilczek from the Institute of Biology, Biotechnology and Environmental Protection of the University of Silesia in Katowice commented on this topic in an interview with “Gazeta Wyborcza”. The expert did this during the action of removing knotweed from the Mysterious Garden in Bielsko-Biała. As he stated:

It is necessary to mow and tear it out at least twice a year. […] The aesthetic values of this area are also adversely affected by the dried shoots of this plant, which can be observed in winter and spring.

In such cases, it is worth starting to act as soon as possible. When the plant is still small and underdeveloped, it is easy to get rid of it effectively. It is worth starting the felling at the beginning of May. This is when the plants begin their growing season. Several cuttings should be made between May and June. However, after cutting the perennial, it is worth covering the ground with thick black foil. We also need to constantly monitor whether the shoots do not grow back.
