Cooking pasta is not the most difficult task in the kitchen. But did you know that there is a way to get perfectly cooked pasta without using so much energy?

Energy bills are still high for many households as a result of the recent energy crisis, so reducing energy consumption where possible can save us precious pennies. And one of the pasta cooking tricks hailed by celebrity chef Nigella Lawson aims to do just that, because involves turning off the stovetop long before the pasta is actually cooked.

What is an easy way to save energy and money?

On Nigella’s website, the chef refers to this method as the “Vincenzo Agnesi method” and says it “reduces the risk of overcooking” the pasta, so it’s perfect if you’re feeding a lot of people and have other things to do in the kitchen. Others call it the “passive cooking method” and praise it for saving money.

So what is this method? Well, you still have to bring a pot of water to a boil normally, but once you add the pasta, you only need to cook it for two minutes, then turn off the stove, put a lid on the pot, and leave the pasta until it’s cooked.

This simple trick really works and does not use as much energy as normal cooking

Nigella writes on her website: ‘Bring the water to a boil, add the salt and then add the pasta, stirring well to make sure it is whole and not clumping. When the water comes to a boil again, let the pasta cook for two minutes, then turn off the heat, cover the pot with a clean, thin cloth and tighten the tight-fitting lid. Let the pasta stand like this for as long as on the package to cook it normally.
