Director and animator John Musker criticized the recent actions of The Walt Disney Company in an interview with the French El Pais. The creator of “The Little Mermaid”, “Aladdin” and “Moana” referred to the financial problems that weighed on the studio after four of the five films released last year were on the list of the biggest film failures according to Deadline magazine. The studio was to lose at least $100 million on each production.
John Musker criticizes Disney
John Musker, who left The Walt Disney Company six years ago due to mass layoffs, stated in an interview with El Pais that the studio should focus on creating a story that will captivate the viewer and only then focus on the political message.
“I think they need to course-correct a little bit, putting the message second to entertainment, a compelling story and engaging characters,” Musker said at the Animayo international summit in Gran Canaria last week.
“Classic Disney films didn’t start out trying to convey a message. They wanted you to engage with the characters, the story and the world, and I think that’s still the point. You don’t have to give up on those plans, but first you have to create characters you sympathize with and which are convincing,” added the director, at the same time referring to remakes of classic animations.
According to John Musker, the creators of the new version of “The Little Mermaid” presented the father-daughter relationship inappropriately to the viewers. “They didn’t present the story of the father and daughter, and in a sense that was the essence of the animated film. And Sebastian the crab – you can look at live animals in the zoo and they have more expression, even like in The Lion King,” Musker commented during the international Animayo summit in Gran Canaria .
