George Lucas on Martin Scorsese after Marvel’s criticism. “I think he changed his mind”

During an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, George Lucas referred to Martin Scorese’s critical statement about Marvel’s production. The creator of “Star Wars” explained why superhero movies should be treated as cinema.

Marvel productions have faced criticism from famous filmmakers in recent years. Pandora’s box was first opened by Martin Scorsese in 2019. The director of “The Bloody Moon” and “The Irishman” stated in an interview for “Empire” that films set in the superhero universe are not cinema “in which a person tries to convey emotional and psychological experiences to other people.” The filmmaker also compared Marvel productions to amusement parks.

Other auteurs — Francis Ford Coppola and Quentin Tarantino — also gave back to the director. Opposition to such a critical assessment of Marvel’s films was expressed by Peter Ramsey, who jokingly encouraged Scorsese to “chill out,” and Joss Whedon, who wrote on X: “I was outraged when people picketed ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ without watching the film. “I’m sorry that he now judges my films the same way.”

George Lucas commented on Martin Scorsese’s words

George Lucas also commented on Martin Scorese’s words during this year’s interview at the Cannes Film Festival. The director and creator of the popular “Star Wars” series was asked what he thought about his colleague’s critical statement from 2019. “Look. Cinema is the art of the moving image. So if the image moves, it’s cinema. I think Marty has changed his mind a bit,” Lucas said.

During the same interview, the director also put an end to rumors regarding his alleged return behind the camera. George Lucas assured that the animation “Strange Magic” was the last production of his film career. “Now I’m building a museum in Los Angeles. It’s keeping me very busy,” he added.
