Jarosław and Lech Kaczyński gained popularity at a young age thanks to their role in the film “Two Men Who Stole the Moon” from 1962. This film, based on the novel by Kornel Makuszyński, became a hit at the time. As Jarosław Kaczyński recalled, it was an interesting experience, but not enough to devote his professional life to it.
Family values and education
Upbringing in the Kaczyński family played a key role in shaping their interests. Their mother, Jadwiga Kaczyńska, was a Polish philologist, which had a significant impact on her sons’ intellectual development. The Kaczyński family was strongly associated with patriotic traditions, which resulted in a deep interest in Polish history, politics and social issues.
they graduated in law from the University of Warsaw. Jarosław specialized in administrative law, and Lech in labor law. Their legal education focused their attention on social and political problems, which influenced their further professional path. “I knew from the beginning that my place was in politics, not on the stage” – recalled Jarosław Kaczyński.
A children’s adventure with film
Before entering politics, Jarosław and Lech Kaczyński made their debut on screens as actors, becoming child stars of Polish cinema. The decision to participate in the film was not their own – it was uncle Stanisław Miedza-Tomaszewski who sent the application during the recruitment for the film, which ultimately resulted in their engagement. Their mother had to quit her job at school to accompany her sons on set.
Lech Kaczyński recalled in interviews that working on the set was tiring – repeating shots, changing recording locations and the need to catch up on learning. Despite this, the brothers had a great time, although they also made… Actor Marek Kondrat remembered them as “two devils”.
“Jarek did something wrong and was called to Mr. Petersile (film producer). Jarek listened to the reprimand, and all this took place in a new building, almost completely empty. Jarek nodded, he left and then… turned the key in the door. He locked up the secretary and Mr. Petersile. It was a big disaster.”
Moving away from acting
Lech Kaczyński recalled that it was while shooting the film that he realized that his true passion was politics. “I will surprise you gentlemen – it was then that I decided to become a politician” – said Lech Kaczyński. He also added that direct involvement in film production gave him a unique insight into Poland’s social and cultural diversity, which confirmed his belief in the need for political changes. Jarosław Kaczyński, in turn, said that he had already made the decision to enter politics before filming began. “Even before shooting the film, I knew that my place was in politics.”
about getting involved in politics was dictated by a sense of mission and responsibility for the fate of the country. The Kaczyński brothers believed that they could really influence the shaping of Poland’s futurewhich was much more satisfying for them than their acting career.
