Are there tiger mosquitoes in Poland? Rising temperatures are their ally. “There is no procedure”

In recent years, we have increasingly heard reports from various European countries that they have registered the presence of tiger mosquitoes. This is due to global warming and a significant increase in average temperatures. Are there tiger mosquitoes in Poland?

The tiger mosquito is a dangerous, invasive insect known for transmitting infectious diseases such as dengue and zika. We can see it more and more often in Europe, and this month it was probably also seen in Poland. As the climate warms, it poses an increasingly real threat to our health. Fighting this species of mosquito requires preventive measures, but are we ready for it?

Is the tiger mosquito dangerous? The key is to recognize it

The tiger mosquito is quite distinctive and everyone should recognize it without any problems. As its name suggests, it is characterized by light stripes running throughout the body. It differs from an ordinary mosquito in that it is active from early morning to late afternoon. It can be found mainly in the city, and for breeding it needs a small water tank, e.g. a bottle with rainwater or a bowl of water for a pet. This is very bad news, because there is a lot of forgotten packaging in urban spaces, which creates ideal conditions for insects to increase their population. Viral diseases transmitted by tiger mosquitoes are very dangerous to humanswhich is why it is so important to monitor their population and try to prevent the multiplication of these insects.

Are there tiger mosquitoes in Poland? Every year we hear about insect sightings

So far, tiger mosquitoes have not posed a major threat. This species did not have appropriate conditions for reproduction due to the cold autumn and frosty winter. For several years now, we have been hearing about the presence of mosquitoes in various parts of Europe, e.g. in Albania, Greece, Italy, Slovakia and Germany. The website published a photo from a reader that would indicate the presence of tiger mosquitoes in the south of the country. However, in Poland there is no official confirmation of the occurrence of this variety. Therefore, we can only take the individual to a mosquito research center on our own to confirm the mosquito species and check whether it is a carrier of diseases. What is confirmed by prof. Ph.D. Anna Bajer.

I’m afraid that there is actually no procedure and no quick response services. There are scientific centers that deal with mosquitoes, e.g. the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine in Gdynia, GUMED. You can take such a mosquito to the center and scientists will confirm the presence of the species or not. No one will perform such registration based on the description or photos alone.

Many people fear the viruses that tiger mosquitoes can spread. Therefore, it is very surprising that there are no procedures that could be implemented if the presence of insects in our country is confirmed. So the question arises: how can we respond to them? First of all, let’s invest in a good repellent with a high concentration of DEET. This is currently the only option that will increase our chances against these bloodsuckers.
