Do we love with our hearts, our minds… or our wallets? Get ready for metaphysical experiences in the new play “Eraser Merchants” at the 6th Floor Theater

Three lonely forty-year-olds, a series of unbelievable events and lots of unfulfilled dreams of love. This is “Eraser Merchants”, a tragicomic play written for three voices, sparkling with wit and striking in drama by Hanoch Levin. Katarzyna Dąbrowska, Grzegorz Ma³ecki and Borys Szyc perform in the June premiere at the 6.piętro Theater in Warsaw.

“I have the feeling that I am living my whole life in this moment, I am waiting in the dark and soon the curtain will rise, the stage will be flooded with blinding light and my multicolored life will begin to flow before my face. ” – says one of the characters in Levin’s play.

It starts innocently. A shy customer, Johanan (Borys Szyc), comes to a pharmacy in a small seaside town. He wants to buy a condom, but he is very shy. Especially since there is a very attractive woman behind the counter. This is Bela (Katarzyna Dąbrowska), the owner of the pharmacy. And after a while, Szmuel (Grzegorz Ma³ecki) appears at the place, who has his father’s inheritance to sell – thousands of what he claims are great Australian condoms.

This is where the wild, hands-off ride begins, with condoms in the background. Johanan, Bela and Szmuel decide to give themselves one last chance and start fighting for love. It’s difficult because it’s best done in a duo, and there are three of them. Each of them dreams of something, but is afraid to make these dreams come true. They attract and repel each other at the same time. They want to do something, but they are stuck in stagnation. Instead of acting constructively, they hit each other painfully. From these paradoxes and contrasts, an emotionally-dense, absorbing story is created on stage, with which a modern viewer can identify with success, amusement and horror.

Especially since not only love is involved. Money also counts. Bela wants to expand her business, Johanan has large savings, and Szmuel wants to make great money on his troublesome inheritance from his father.

The 6th Piętro Theater once again presents art that hits the nail on the head and provokes thought. Because in Bela, Szmuel and Johanan, everyone can see themselves in a mirror, regardless of gender and age.

The extraordinary worlds of Hanoch Levin

Hanoch Levin is one of the most original contemporary playwrights. His plays are extremely popular in Poland. Levin has created his own original style and gets to the “essence of life”. He played with words, characters, conventions, and mixed genres.

Hanoch Levin, born in Israel, combined satire with romanticism. He came from a Polish family. He lived for 56 years (1943-1999) and lived in Tel Aviv, where he was born. His work provokes and challenges the saints. This man of theater wrote 56 plays, of which he directed over 20 himself. His works can be seen on the best Polish stages.

In Hanoch Levin’s plays, ordinary life, the so-called normal people take on unexpected meanings. At least some extraordinary things are happening there. Only he could write a drama whose hero receives 10,000 inheritance. Australian condoms. His dramas are a bit like Jewish jokes – nothing is really in its place, and everything fits together perfectly. The characters sometimes behave like dangerous beasts, and then they hum a romantic song and start fawning over each other.

People in Levin’s plays often suffer from “loneliness”. They do everything to recover, but they are not very successful. Even if they manage to “be with someone”, they still live “single”. They go to war with fate and social arrangements, they look for solace and long for a better world. And the viewer with them.

is one of Levin’s “home comedies”. The author mocks the myth of masculinity and the need to conduct successful business transactions. In his plays, as here, women come to the fore, although men seem to still be dealing the cards.

Stars in “The Eraser Traders”

The director at the 6th Piętro Theater is Adam Sajnuk. He is one of the most interesting Polish theater directors. Co-founder of the Konsekwentny theater, artistic director of the WARSawy Theater. This is a man who calls himself a “theater miracle worker.” He cooperates with many Warsaw scenes.

is a chamber play, performed on a grand scale, written for three characters. Great actors played in it – well-known to the audience from films, TV series and theaters. Actually, there is no need to introduce any of this trio – Katarzyna Dąbrowska (“Czas honoru”, “Niewinne”, “For better and for worse”), Grzegorz Ma³ecki (“The Master”, “Osiecka”, “Kurier”, “Blondynka”) and Borys Szyc (“Warszawianka”, “Forst”, “Król”).

The adventures of the heroes take place on a stage sparkling with the lights of a big city, accompanied by live music composed for the show by the composer and multi-instrumentalist Micha³ Lam¿a. All this is so suggestive that – as the creators of the show claim, “many viewers will feel like rushing onto the stage and shaking the characters hard to wake them up from their selfish dreams of wealth, fame and perfect sex… “. Attention! – The show is for adults only. The content and form of the performance openly raise issues of sex and eroticism. Premiere on June 28, 2024.
