Addressing parents-in-law as “mom, dad” was a common practice until recently. In this way, it was emphasized that on the wedding day, two families became one and the newlyweds were warmly welcomed into their family. Today, more and more people are moving away from this practice. We asked the residents of Warsaw how they think you should address your father-in-law and mother-in-law. You can watch the recording below:
How to address your father-in-law and mother-in-law?
Some people address their in-laws impersonally to avoid awkwardness. However, our interlocutors note that the most important thing is to establish a form that everyone feels comfortable with. – It depends on the father-in-law and mother-in-law (…) If they want it, then by name, and if not, then by name. But I wouldn’t say father/mother, emphasized one of the capital’s residents.
Another interlocutor said that it is most convenient to simply call him “father-in-law” or “mother-in-law”. When asked if he would call himself “mom” or “daddy”, he firmly denied it. – God forbid. There is only one mother. Fogg sang, he emphasized. We asked his companion the same question. – Everything’s fine with me, but I have a son-in-law who calls me “sir”, he confessed.
Many people believe that this form is the most convenient. – I guess “sir or “ma’am” (…) I understand that some people say mom/dad, but for me it’s a bit strange – we heard. – I also call myself “ma’am”. In the future I heard it said “Mom” or “Ms. Mom” can also be done – added another person.
– I believe that at some point you can call them mom/dad at their request. However, as Mr./Ms. Due to personal culture – said another resident of the capital.
Call your father-in-law and mother-in-law by name? “It wouldn’t go down my throat”
Many young people admitted that they could call their father-in-law and mother-in-law by their first names. – I call myself “ma’am” now, but I’m not married. However, if you are already married, then just as your mother-in-law will say. If he says mom, then mom. If not, then “ma’am” or by your first name, was the answer. – Some people call their in-laws mom/dad, but I think people of my generation often call them by their first names, another person agreed. However, this form does not suit everyone. – By name, probably not so much. Somehow it doesn’t go down my throat – said another resident of Warsaw. How do you address your in-laws?
