He shot his last film 8 years ago. Gibson returns as director and with a bang

After a several-year break from working behind the camera, Mel Gibson returns as the director of “Flight Risk”. This is the director’s first film since “Hacksaw Ridge” in 2016. Lionsgate studio has already announced the premiere date of the new production starring Mark Wahlberg.

Mel Gibson last stepped behind the camera in 2016 as the director of “Hacksaw Ridge,” which caused rather mixed feelings among film critics. Since then, the filmmaker has appeared in dozens of different productions, although most of them as a supporting actor. This was the case, among others, with the role in “The Secret Informant” and “The Road of No Return”.

Mel Gibson returns as director of Flight Risk. Mark Wahlberg will play the main role

Last year, Mel Gibson began working on the film based on Jared Rosenberg’s 2020 script. So far, the script “Flight Risk” was included on the Black List of Hollywood Screenplays and was considered one of the best unrealized projects in the film industry.

The cast of “Flight Risk” included Topher Grace, Michelle Dockery and Mark Wahlberg, and for the latter of these it is not the first collaboration with Mel Gibson. The actors had previously met on the set of the series “Dad vs. Dad” and the film “Father Stu”. Wahlberg, in turn, recently starred in “The Spenser Investigation,” “The Tour Plan” and the 2024 film “Arthur My Dog.”

“Flight Risk” will tell the story of an attempt to rescue an FBI informant (played by Topher Grace) by a paid killer (Mark Wahlberg). The killer steals the identity of one of the pilots and then sits at the controls of the plane in which the main character is transported. The premiere of the film, on which Mel Gibson collaborated with John Davis and John Fox, is scheduled for October 18, 2024. Interestingly, on the same day “Smile 2”, the sequel to the famous horror film “Smile”, will also be officially distributed.
