The general director of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Juan Ignacio Vidarteconsiders that “the time has come to close a cycle that has spanned three decades, and that it is their responsibility to open a new stage in the institution where other views and experiences are incorporated that take the baton and project the Museum into the future.” , facing the challenges that arise.”

The Board of Trustees of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Foundation met this Monday under the presidency of Iñigo Urkullu, lehendakari, and with the assistance of Elixabete Etxanobe, general deputy of Bizkaia and president of the Executive Committee of the Foundation; Bingen Zupiria, Minister of Culture and Linguistic Policy of the Basque Government; Leixuri Arrizabalaga, regional deputy for Basque, Culture and Sports; Juan María Aburto, mayor of Bilbao, Jon Azua, representative of the institutions on the Board of Trustees of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, and representatives of the companies and entities that are part of the highest governing body of the Foundation.

At the end of the session, as reported by the body in a note, Juan Ignacio Vidarte has proposed to the Board of Trustees to begin the transition in the management of the museum, a process that will be formalized throughout this year.

With this decision culminates a trajectory of 32 years since in 1992 Juan Ignacio Vidarte was appointed director of the Consortium in charge of launching the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and became, in 1996, its until now first and only director general.

“A life cycle that began more than 30 years ago is completed with the development of this ambitious and almost utopian project, the creation of a team to lead it and the launch of a museum different from any of those that existed then and that, at the same time, helped change the image and aspirations of a country,” said Vidarte.

At the conclusion of this process, the current general director will continue to be linked to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao as director emeritusand the Guggenheim Foundation in international initiatives of a strategic nature related to the museum constellation.

Vidarte will give more explanations in a Press conference which will take place this Tuesday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m. at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
