The linguist Itziar Laka has been awarded the Eusko Ikaskuntza-Laboral Kutxa Prize for Humanities, Culture, Arts and Social Sciences 2024. The linguist has made “innovative and far-reaching contributions to the development of Basque and to the deepening of the mechanisms that govern linguistic competences “, according to the award ruling.
The award jury was made up of representatives of Musikene and the seven universities in the geographical area of Eusko Ikaskuntza, together with representatives of Eusko Ikaskuntza and Laboral Kutxa.
In the opinion of the jury, Laka “is a great example, also among youth, at the highest scientific level, working on Basque with innovative methodologies, with cutting-edge research, in fields of great importance today.”
The jury noted how “it has banished with scientific evidence some of the myths that have existed around bilingualism, with a clear contribution not only to Basque, but also to linguistics.”
His lines of research focus on linguistic theory, syntax, Basque grammar, psycholinguistics, cognitive neuroscience of language and bilingualism.
Last week, the name of the winners of the Eusko Ikaskuntza-Laboral Kutxa Gazte Saria Award was announced: Garazi Navas and Maite Aizpurua, for the performative work “Adarbakarra eta soinujolea”.
