“A Simple Matter” is an adaptation of Wojciech Chmielarz’s book of the same title. The novel was adapted by director Cyprian T. Olencki, who wrote the script and then directed the shooting of the series. He has already proven to viewers that he can make good genre cinema with a loud “”. In this film, Golden played the role of an unbalanced gangster brilliantly. In the new project, he again played the role of a tough guy, but this one is a surprisingly different type of hero. Damięcki and the director of “Furioza” surprise with a new series. “I got this movie without an audition”
– Our main concern when making “A Simple Matter” was, of course, how much the common denominator in the form of Mateusz Damięcki would influence the fact that the Nameless One could be similar to Golden. Same director, same actor, same cinematographer. Well, there were a few constants that could be a big challenge in such cases, and fortunately it turned out that all you had to do was be professional, do your job properly, and that was probably enough for Golden and Inco to not even intertwine at all – Mateusz Damięcki told us.
– I got the film without an audition, which was great. Contrary to appearances, I have been listening to questions for some time now (…) and many people think that these scenarios are lying in piles and piles on my desk and I am just choosing. This is not the case, the actor emphasized. – I am even more glad that Cyprian offered me this role without a casting. I have the impression that when he was making “Furioza”, we both knew that we wanted to work together because we have quite a similar attitude to work. We like to work hard and try to do it honestly. I’m not saying that others do it dishonestly, but we share a common path, looking at the cinema. And it was very encouraging when Cyprian suggested it to me – he describes the agreement between him and Olencki.
What exactly does this involve? – Our main task was to duplicate as little as possible what we had already done, because this is the essence of our work. Cyprian is a man who performs his job very professionally and this means that he does something different every time, he is not secondary – praises the director Mateusz Damięcki.
It cannot be denied that although Damięcki has been working in his profession for almost 30 years, until the premiere of “Furioza” no one even suspected that the actor would perform so well in such an action movie and in the role of a character so different from himself. – It’s so strange that over the years I have met many directors and producers who completely forgot about this definition of the profession and its internally changing nature, so I was constantly offered the same roles: exactly corresponding to what I look like and what I am like after all. just every day, sauté, but suddenly it turned out that it wasn’t the point at all – he points out.
Meanwhile, the actor likes professional challenges and finds great fulfillment thanks to them. – The coolest moments in my professional life are the moments when, for example, I have three productions in one day. It’s happened to me a few times in my life, when I have to shoot one scene in one movie somewhere, and then I go to my place to watch a TV series. I’m shooting six or seven scenes there, but I have to do it quickly enough to make it to the theater in the evening. And suddenly it turns out that in one day I am three completely different characters. I always have the ambition that each of them would not even stand next to each other in a queue, that each of them would be different, that it would not be easy for me. And then I come home and I’m completely different there and then I get great satisfaction – he confessed during our conversation.
In his opinion, this principle has versatile applications. – It’s the same with directing: you just need to be a professional and learn it. You have to constantly try to follow untrodden paths: constantly look for other solutions in cooperation with the cinematographer or in cooperation with the actor. It’s worth choosing different actors to see how they work, how you need to talk to them to achieve your goal and what you set for yourself. Or take those who are already tired of one image and try to break that image. So that it would be good both for the film and for the actor, so that he could discover something new in himself and see “Damn, someone trusted me. I can do this, and I thought I couldn’t, because no one ever gave me such an opportunity.”
Damięcki on the last scene together before his father’s death: I am grateful
In the first episode of the series, Mateusz Damięcki shares scenes with his father, Maciej Damięcki, who died in November 2023. His appearance in “A Simple Case” is his last film role, and the entire sequence is extremely moving.
For me, on the one hand, it is very personal, but on the other hand, it is not personal, because my dad was an actor and in my eyes he is still an actor. In general, it’s great that we as actors, like several other professions, have the opportunity to be registered for longer and for more people.
I’m very happy that my dad will be seen by many people (…) that even at such a damn difficult moment in his life, because he was tired and sick, he simply created a gem in this series.
I am very grateful that he had the courage to propose his texts, which Cyprian immediately bought. This text titled ‘Son, don’t teach your father how to make children’ was so risky for me in this context, but in the end it turned out to be brilliant. This is an insert that we allowed ourselves, but it worked and it is important to me that my dad and I played together in these two scenes.
Cyprian kept telling me after he saw his dad on the set: ‘I knew from the very beginning that he should play this hero. And you will see that you will be satisfied.’ I’m very happy because nothing was cut, everything that dad had in mind stayed. It’s all in this material and I can watch it as much as I want.
Damięcki about a risky meeting after “Furioza”. “I thought I must have overdone it.”
What changed after “Furioza” in Maciej Damięcki’s everyday life? – I am often asked for a photo by people who have never asked me for a photo before. It’s actually quite funny that the target group of “Furioza” was also made up of people I don’t deal with on a daily basis. Or sometimes at some gyms. Although at the gym I go to there are people I have known very well for five years and they no longer impress me. But they could probably impress others on the street, but I’m already on the other side – says the actor.
However, sometimes it happens that someone surprises Damięcki. – Recently, a man I didn’t know before came to the gym, where I already felt very safe and at ease. I was in a bad mood and when I was panting over something, he blurted out: “Oh shit, it’s you Golden. How the hell did you do it?” And I looked at him and said, “Well, I used to come here and look at people like you.” And so suddenly it became quiet. I thought to myself that I must have overdone it. But he’s here for the first time, and I’ve been here already, and I just stuck my chest out and said: “Aaah, good, good, isn’t it?” with laughter – he recalls with amusement.
He notes that acting brings him various benefits. – It’s also great that you can identify for a moment in your life with a person you have never been. To feel for a split second what it would be like, and then safely return to the positions I had chosen in advance, which are much more comfortable and life-like for me. But just for a moment to be aware that there are people who actually live like this, there are people who have passions like my hero, who have such a path of life and who have no scruples, just like my hero, this is good in life – he noted .
