Cultural bonus for young people: how much money will it be? What can it be invested in? When does it come into effect?

The Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, presented this Thursday in the Reading Promotion Plan 2021-2024 the characteristics of the cultural voucher for young people.

How much will this help to youth and culture be?

All young people who in 2022 comply 18 years old will receive a bonus of 400 euros to be used for cultural activities in different areas.

From when will it be available?

Minister Iceta explained yesterday that it will be after the approval and entry into force of the General State Budgets when “the mechanism that allows young people to have that amount is put into operation.” Therefore, as he has warned, the actual launch “won’t be until May or June”. “We have a very finished design that will take the form of a decree and we will be able to approve that between the end of January and mid-February,” he added in this regard.

What type of content can you invest in?

Regarding the contents, Iceta stated that they will be those born from “the most traditional cultural sectors” such as the book, cinema, performing arts, music, live shows, or “online” platforms and subscriptions to newspapers and magazines. Even if spending on digital content will be capped at up to 100 euros, and within that game it will also be covered – it is not yet known if it will be for months or money – consumption on platforms, in such a way that they cannot allocate the 100 euros only to Netflix, Movistar or HBO, among others; rather, they can be applied to other content offered by digital music platforms such as Spotify or podcast.

How much money will the Government invest?

The head of Culture and Sports indicated during his speech that the cultural voucher counts with a budget item 210 million euros. In addition, work is being done on the inclusion of formulas so that the beneficiary of the voucher can invite a person to any of the shows they attend, and that this may also have some “benefit”.

On the other hand, it is working with transport companies so that young people who benefit from the voucher can access grants on the move. “Not all cities have the same offer and that is why we want there to be support for this mobility,” he concluded.
