Leeches are unpleasant creatures that fill many people with fear or even disgust. Meanwhile, not everyone knows that in Poland there is a variety that can reach up to 10 cm in length.

Probably few people would like to have direct contact with leeches. Most often, we can “admire” them in movies that take place in the jungle or swampy areas. In addition, some varieties are used in the treatment of patients, including: improves circulation and cleanses the body. Among the entire group, the most terrifying thing is the large horse leech.

This is one of the largest leeches in Poland. It was believed to attack cattle

The horse leech is one of the largest varieties found almost everywhere. It owes its name to old beliefs that it was supposed to attack cattle coming to watering holes. It was believed that it got into the mouths of cows and horses and there it found a place to feed on their blood. Of course, this is nothing but nonsense, because in reality the horse leech is a predator, not a parasite.

Does the horse leech bite? It is not a parasite

The horse leech does not pose a threat to mammals because it feeds mainly on small invertebrates and small vertebrates, such as small fish and tadpoles. Interestingly, we can meet it almost all over the country, and more specifically near reservoirs and their surroundings. Even though it can reach up to 10 cm in length and looks disturbing and, to some people, probably repulsive, you should not be afraid of it. Not people.

Leeches in Poland. What species can we meet?

Leeches have been known since ancient times. In Poland alone we can meet 46 different species. They have an elongated, soft body with suction cups on both sides. Almost none of them found in our country pose a threat to humans. Even those that are parasites prefer animal blood. The only exception is the medical leech. Interestingly, it is used in treatment under controlled conditions, among others supports the fight against heart disease and varicose veins. However, seeing it “in the wild” is rare. It is worth knowing that it is subject to strict protection.
