Members of the royal family continue the centuries-old tradition of immortalizing themselves in paintings. King Charles has just received his first portrait in the royal role he has been performing for a year. The author of the work, Jonathan Yeo, wanted to capture Charles’ transformation from prince to king, which is why there is a butterfly in the painting. However, it is difficult to see it in the red covering everything, which is noticed by the subjects.
The first portrait of King Charles
“Is this a satire on the monarch who has blood on his hands?”, “He looks like he is bathed in blood”, “Is this an allusion to the fact that he wanted to be a tampon?” – such reactions unfortunately dominate on social media, where the first royal portrait was presented to the general public. Against a mere red background, King Charles was immortalized wearing a uniform of the same color. Huge hands and a face come to the fore. Somewhere in the details of the painting there was supposed to be a visible butterfly – a symbol of metamorphosis, but unfortunately it was lost in the sea of red.
When I started this painting, his highness was still a prince, and like a butterfly over his shoulder, this portrait evolved as his role changed. I wanted to include his life experiences and humanity enchanted in his face – explained the author of the portrait, Jonathan Yeo.
King Charles, present at the unveiling of the portrait, wisely joked that he was unaware that he was a “chrysalis”.
The bloody image has already been compared on the Internet, among others: to the infamous tampon that Charles, as a prince, wanted to be for Camilla years ago. There were also comparisons with a reproduction of a painting from “Ghostbusters” – the famous demonic Vigo from the Carpathians, feeding on hatred, was also painted in shades of red, the more he was saturated with violence. The questions about whether King Charles is in hell or a bloodbath are so numerous that it is surprising that the author of the painting has not yet answered them.
This is not his first work for the royal family. Jonathan Yeo painted the king’s wife, Camilla, a few years ago. Her painting was also kept in similar colors, but due to the gray surroundings of the future queen consort, it was not commented on so vividly.
