He lost his sight and then the use of his hands. After an audience with the Pope, he recovered. Today he talks about a miracle

Mariusz Drapikowski is considered one of the most outstanding Polish creators of sacred art in the world, but over 20 years ago his career hung in the balance. Due to the disease, he began to lose his sight and the use of his hands. His condition improved significantly only after meeting John Paul II. Today, the artist does not doubt that it was thanks to the Holy Father that he experienced a miracle.

Mariusz Drapikowski is a world-renowned Polish sculptor specializing in goldsmithing. He has completed many outstanding projects, mainly religious ones. The most popular ones include: amber altar in St. Basilica Bridget in Gdańsk and the amber dress of the icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa. Few people know, however, that the artist has been claiming for years that he experienced a miracle.

Due to the disease, he began to lose his eyesight, and the doctors were powerless. An audience with the Pope changed the life of the Polish sculptor

Over 20 years ago, Drapikowski contracted multiple sclerosis, as a result of which he began to lose his eyesight and later also the use of his hands, which made it impossible for him to work. He underwent treatment in Poland, but it did not bring any results, so he went to German specialists for help. None of the treatments he received worked, and the disease continued to progress, making it impossible for him to function normally. – The situation was becoming more and more dramatic from week to week. But I don’t remember praying for health then – in an interview for “Nasz Dziennik” magazine. – Instead, I made a monstrance, as if by throwing it onto a tape and with the last of my strength. It was supposed to be my thanks for my whole life, for my family and for that answered prayer for meaning – he said.

In 2003, he completed the above-mentioned project, which he called “Rosarium Viriginis Mariae”, and then donated it to the Pauline Order at Jasna Góra. Father Marian Lubelski, who was their leader, offered him a joint trip to the Vatican as a way of thanking him. It was a big challenge for the artist, as his health was already in poor condition, but he agreed to the proposal and went with his family to meet him.

John Paul II blessed Drapikowski. A week later, the artist began to regain his sight

Before visiting Drapikowski, he asked his companions not to mention his illness, because he wanted to distance himself from the worries of everyday life, at least for a moment. – I couldn’t see at all in one eye, I could barely distinguish objects in the other, and I also had a big problem with walking – he said in an interview with the portal “Przewodnik Catholic”, adding that he moved around leaning on his wife’s arm. During the audience, John Paul II began to ask what their plans were for the future. Then the artist decided to share one of his desires. – And then, completely irrationally, because I was no longer capable of it, I said that my dream was to make an amber dress for the icon of Our Lady of Jasna Góra. She burst into tears, he recalled, adding that the Holy Father “was not aware of his health problems.” At the end of the meeting, he blessed him by placing his hand on his head. As he later admitted, he will never forget this moment.

A week after these events, the artist began to notice a significant improvement in his well-being and health. He gradually regained feeling in his hands as well as his eyesight. Doctors were surprised, especially since the troublesome symptoms had not returned for over 20 years. Today, Drapikowski has no doubt that he experienced a miracle. Since then, he has completed many projects, including the announced amber dress, which he mentioned during the audience. – The Holy Father managed to bless the golden crowns, which are part of the whole – he said in “Nasz Dziennik”.
