Recently, a series of fires have swept through Poland. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the element left considerable damage. For example, on May 12, on the night from Saturday to Sunday, a fire broke out in the shopping center at Marywilska Street. It was reported that flames appeared in several places. The element took over 80 percent of the hall, which has a capacity of 60,000. sq m All the goods inside burned.
Fires in Poland
On Sunday around noon, another fire broke out in the capital. This time, a bulk storage yard near Warsaw’s southern bypass in Wilanów caught fire. Earlier, a fire broke out in the garbage and construction materials sorting plant in Siekierki, Mokotów. The District Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki also informed that on Sunday a fire broke out in the Kampinos National Park in Janówek. No one was hurt, but 2,500 were burned. square meters of forest. In turn, on the night from Sunday to Monday, a fire began to consume the bus depot in Bytom. On Monday morning, there was a fire at the school in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, where students were taking their final exams.
Due to the wave of fires, some people may ask themselves how to prepare for such eventualities? Although it is of course unusual for us to expect a fire to break out in our building or its vicinity, it is worth having the necessary things at hand to take with us during an evacuation. This article is absolutely not intended to scare you with possible disasters. These are only tips that are worth following in the event of a crisis, such as a flood or fire.
Emergency backpack in case of fire. What should be inside?
When an evacuation is in progress (e.g. from a burning building), the dangerous place should be left as soon as possible. Therefore, we will certainly not have time to pack the most necessary things. For this purpose, it will be useful to prepare an emergency backpack in advance, which can be placed at the entrance to the apartment, near the window, etc. So that when leaving, you can simply grab it in your hands. What should such an emergency backpack contain? In April 2024, we could learn from this, among others: from the website launched by the Government Center for Security. But that’s not the only place where we can find information on this subject. We can also learn about what an emergency backpack should contain in the event of, for example, a fire evacuation, from various websites devoted to state protection, rescue services, but also from the websites of sports stores offering equipment for camping in a tent.
The emergency backpack is also called BOB (Bug Out Bag). The idea is to have the necessary items and the most needed resources in one place in the event of an emergency. It may be, for example, a natural disaster – avalanche, hurricane, earthquake, flood, etc. These are situations that require immediate leaving of the place of residence. This is also the case with a fire in a residential building, during which firefighters evacuate residents. A previously prepared emergency backpack allows you to quickly take the most important documents, money, medicines, clothes, etc.
What should be in an emergency backpack? First of all, it is worth remembering that the contents of such luggage should be tailored to the individual needs of its owner. However, there is a list of items that will certainly be useful to everyone. You should pack your emergency backpack with:
- Water, e.g. in a special bottle with a filter (and make sure it is fresh and changed regularly)
- Food with a long shelf life, preferably canned food, dry food, freeze-dried food, energy bars, etc.
- First aid kit with medicines, disinfectants, bandages, etc.
- A compact flashlight
- Powerbank
- Battery
- A charged mobile phone
- Battery operated radio
- Extra batteries
- A map, compass and other navigation devices – e.g. if the evacuation is carried out far from the city, e.g. in a forest area
- Sleeping bag
- Clothing in case of low temperature, rain, etc.
- Cash supply (except credit card)
- Identity documents – it is also worth having photocopies of ID cards, passports, insurance, birth certificates, extracts from land and mortgage registers, property deeds, basic medical information, pension and income certificates, etc.
Red briefcase. What should it contain?
This last point is also extremely important. Another thing that is worth having prepared for a rainy day is the so-called “red briefcase”. Although its description may sound ominous and disturbing – it is a set of documents and instructions on how to proceed in the event of death – it is absolutely not about panicking in advance! This is only a security measure that, in rare, crisis situations, can protect our family, e.g. against ambiguities in property proceedings in the event of a tragedy.
“The black box is a tool for recording information about the flight. It is from it that specialists find out what was the key cause of the disaster. Instead of a black box, every family should have a special folder. A red folder at home should contain the most important information about what to do when the greatest disaster occurs, i.e. death” – we could read in 2021 in an article published on the website
In turn, the author of the blog, Marcin Iwuć, stipulates that the contents of such a folder may vary depending on many factors. On the Internet you will find examples of what should be included in the “red folder”. Of course, in this case, its content will also be adapted to individual obligations and needs, but the most important points include:
- Testament
- Farewell letter
- Step-by-step instructions on what to do in the event of sudden death
- List of people who can help and their contact details
- Powers of attorney designating persons to act on our behalf
- Bank accounts
- Notarial deeds
- Copies of ID card and passport
- Driving license and car registration documents
- A birth certificate
- Marriage cerificate
- Information regarding the last will, instructions to transfer support, e.g. to foundations
- Documents confirming running a business or working for a given employer
- Contact details for your employer to notify them
- A list of liabilities, e.g. financial liabilities such as loans and credits, personal debts to be repaid, etc.
- A list of institutions to which the death should be reported, such as an energy supplier, housing association or cable TV provider
- insurance policy
