Maryla Rodowicz and Fidel Castro in one photo. The story of an extraordinary meeting

In 1978, the Youth and Students Festival was held in Havana. And it was at this event that Maryla Rodowicz posed for a photo with Fidel Castro. You can read the story of this special meeting in the article.

In 1978, Maryla Rodowicz took part in the Youth and Students Festival in Havana, as part of an international delegation of artists. This event had a special character because, in addition to stage performances, the artists also had the opportunity to participate in numerous receptions and meetings. “I was honored and excited to represent Poland.” – the artist recalled in an interview for Wysokie Obcasy. One of such meetings bore fruit the already legendary photo in which Fidel Castro embraces Maryla Rodowicz. This event has become one of many symbols of cultural exchange between the Eastern Bloc countries and Cuba.

Unforgettable moments in Havana

During their stay in Havana, after their performance, Maryla Rodowicz and other performers were invited to a reception at the embassy. An impromptu concert, during which Rodowicz performed “The Wagon Ballad” in English, impressed the Cuban leader. “Fidel listened carefully. After my performance, he came up to me, congratulated me and expressed his appreciation for Polish music. – the artist recalled. It was then that the famous photo was taken, about which the artist herself likes to tell anecdotes.

During the party, as Rodowicz said in an interview for “Wysokie Obcasy”, no one expected Fidel Castro’s visit. The sudden appearance of the dictator’s bodyguards searching the embassy introduced initial tension, but quickly turned into excitement at the possibility of an unplanned meeting.

Diplomacy through music

After performing the song, Maryla Rodowicz personally presented her album to Fidel Castro. This moment, as well as the fact that Cuban received records from other artists, shows how music served as a bridge between different worlds and cultures, even in the complex political context of the Cold War.

I don’t think that as a stage artist I did anything wrong or that I participated in any meanness

The Castro photo sparked a variety of reactions in Poland, ranging from enthusiasm to criticism. Some accused Rodowicz of supporting the communist regime. In response to these allegations, the artist stated: “I have never been politically involved. “My music has always been for people, not for ideology.”. She also added that her intentions were always purely artistic and aimed at building bridges between cultures.
