Marek Torzewski, a world-famous tenor, and his wife Barbara Romanowicz-Torzewska have been an example of goodness for over forty years. “Our life consists of simple rules: love, commitment and being together,” says Marek in an interview for VIVA!, emphasizing that sharing joys and sorrows together is the key to their lasting relationship. The couple has been living in Brussels since the 1980s, where they raised their daughter, Agata. The artist admits that thanks to the support of his family, he overcame even the most difficult challenges, including the fight against cancer.
The love story of Marek and Barbara began with a chance meeting in Łódź in 1983. Marek, a young tenor, came to the opera gala and there he noticed Barbara – a beautiful film school graduate. “It was love at first”, says Marek. Barbara, although she did not feel such a strong reaction at first, over time also became enchanted by his voice and personality. “When I saw Marek on stage, his voice enchanted me,” recalls Barbara.
A quick proposal
Marek Torzewski did not hesitate to propose. After only three months of dating, he asked Barbara to marry him, fearing that someone else might win her heart. “I didn’t want her, as a single person, to be dragged to various events without me,” the tenor recalled. In April 1984, the couple got married, and soon their daughter, Agata, was born. When Marek received a job offer at the Royal Opera in Brussels, the family decided to move without hesitation, which opened up new opportunities in his career.
Moving to Belgium was a key moment in the Torzewskis’ lives. Marek started at the Royal Opera in Brussels, which was a huge distinction. Thanks to this contract, the tenor gained international recognition, performing on prestigious stages in La Scala, Paris and New York. Barbara, although she gave up her own professional plans, became his manager, supporting her husband at every step.
A recipe for a successful marriage
Marek and Barbara Torzewscy always emphasized that the key to their successful relationship is mutual understanding and compromise. “Family is the most important thing,” he said in an interview. Their daughter Agata, inheriting her parents’ talents, also found her place on the stage.
Fighting the disease and supporting the family
A few years ago, Marek Torzewski had to face a cancer diagnosis, which was a huge blow to him. “I gave up fighting for myself, I accepted my fate”, the artist recalls. However, thanks to his daughter Agata, whom he promised to walk her to the altar, Marek started the fight. Barbara also recalls this difficult period, emphasizing that despite the pain and suffering, she was always with her husband. Thanks to an experimental treatment method, Marek Torzewski overcame the disease and was able to return to singing.
For Marek and Barbara Torzewski, family has always been the most important thing. “Together nothing is scary for us”, Marek emphasizes. The artist cannot imagine life without the support of his loved ones and looks with joy at every day spent with his wife, daughter and grandson. “Miracles do happen, and my recovery can be counted among them,” says Marek.
