Josh Jones didn’t think he’d be getting into real estate anytime soon, so he managed to convince his parents to let him build his own house in their garage.

Not wanting to spend hundreds of pounds a month on rent, the 21-year-old stayed in his family home and saved £4,000 in cash. But instead of looking for a property elsewhere, he spent eight months converting the garage attached to their four-bed family home in Tunbridge Wells into a stylish one-bedroom apartment.

He worked in the construction industry from the age of 16, but he learned how to build a property with tips from YouTube. Ultimately he spent almost £15,000 on materials and did all the work himself, including removing the garage roof, leveling the floor, adding drainage, building the kitchen and installing the bathroom and bedroom.

In December 2022, Josh approached his mom and dad with the idea of converting their garage into a tiny house. Says that at first his parents weren’t interested in the ideabut Josh was able to convince them.
