Although the word “Israel” was not mentioned during his speech, the controversy and confusion this year is related to this country’s participation in the competition. Eden Golan wanted to take part in Eurovision with a song titled “October Rain”, which brought to mind the Hamas attacks last year, to which Israel responded disproportionately and whose attacks have not stopped since October. Because songs competing for the Crystal Microphone must be apolitical, the European Broadcasting Union forced Israel to change the title to “Hurricane.” The text has also changed, but you can still find references to the events of October 2023.
The audience is booing, there are protests in the streets
Even before the participants arrived in Malmo, where this year’s Eurovision is taking place, many people protested against Israel’s participation. They believe that the country should suffer the same fate as Russia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, i.e. exclusion from the competition. However, the EBU did not decide to take this step.
Israel performed in the second semi-final and got to the final. During Eden Golan’s performance on Saturday, there were protests on the streets of Malmo. Last year’s winner announced that if Israel wins, she will not give the prize to the winner. “The Sun” reports that Loreen, as a sign of protest, will not hand over the award to Eden Golan, but leave it on the column. .
