We have a new minister of culture. Surprise! Who is Hanna Wróblewska?

The new head of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage is Hanna Wróblewska, an art historian, curator and long-time director of the Zachęta National Gallery of Art.

The choice of the new Minister of Culture was shrouded in mystery until the end. The names mentioned in the corridors included: Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, meanwhile the ministry will be led not by a politician, but by a person associated with art for years, with specialized education and extensive experience in managing cultural institutions.

Who is Hanna Wróblewska?

She is an art historian and curator born in 1968. She studied art history at the University of Warsaw. She came to Warsaw’s Zachęta National Gallery of Art while still a student of art history, where she showed viewers around exhibitions. Her mother was also an art historian, she worked at the Museum of Warmia and Mazury. “When my friends asked where my mother worked and I replied ‘in the museum’, they imagined that she was watching the exhibitions, sitting on a chair and knitting – she laughs. Meanwhile, my mother was a researcher, she was interested in old art from those areas. She inherited “Wróblewska realized her research passion at Zachęta” – in the text of “Vogue” from 2021.

In 2010-2021, she was the director of Zachęta, and in 2011-2021, she was the commissioner of the Polish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. When the fate of her directorship at Zachęta was in the balance, which ended with the decision of the then minister Gliński not to renew her appointment after a dozen or so years, a letter asking for Wróblewska to remain in her position was signed by over a thousand people from the broadly understood world of culture. They wrote:

Hanna Wróblewska confirmed her skills and even talent in this position. She is devoted to her work without limits, she is an authority for the entire community of curators and artists, also outside Poland (…) people with Hanna Wróblewska’s competences, talents and personal advantages are not often found.

Her dream cultural institution? “Open. In every way”

In 2022, she became deputy director for scientific and exhibition affairs of the Warsaw Ghetto Museum, and in 2023, director of the Department of National Cultural Institutions of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. She is a member of the Program Council of the Copernicus Science Center and the Art Museum in Łódź.

In the questionnaire, which can be found online, she answered a few questions while she was the head of Zachęta. Thanks to this, we know that her dream cultural institution is one that is “open. In every respect.” What is her biggest professional challenge?

Don’t get bored.

Why such a quick reconstruction of the government? It’s all because of the elections

The reconstruction of the government is related to the participation of incumbent ministers in the elections to the European Parliament. Among them was Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, former head of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Sienkiewicz resigned a few days ago while announcing the Civic Coalition’s electoral lists for the European Parliament.

The Minister of State Assets Borys Budka, the head of the Ministry of Development and Technology Krzysztof Hetman and the head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiński are also leaving the government. The latter was replaced by Tomasz Siemoniak. Jakub Jaworowski will be the head of the Ministry of State Assets, and Krzysztof Paszyk will be the Minister of Development and Technology. .
