Eurovision 2024. Did they or didn’t they boo Israel? There are recordings from the room

Even before Eurovision 2024 started, nine countries signed a declaration demanding Israel’s exclusion from the competition. Before the semi-final with the participation of this country’s representative in Malmo, there were protests on the streets. There was no such clear opposition during the broadcast – some people suggested before the concert that the broadcaster might intervene.

At least 35,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel’s invasion of Palestine last October. The open war is a revenge for the terrorist attack carried out by Hamas – the terrorists killed 1,139 Israeli civilians and kidnapped others. For several months, Israel has been attacking, in addition to military targets, hospitals, refugee camps and residential districts in response – in many people’s opinion a decidedly disproportionate response. That is why the performance of the country’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest, which claims to be apolitical, arouses particular emotions this year.

Israel was definitely booed during the rehearsal, but it was less noticeable during the concert

Eden Golan was booed and booed during the rehearsal before the second semi-final, which could be clearly heard in the recordings posted online. There were also shouts of “Free Palestine”. Several thousand people protested on Swedish streets with Palestinian flags, demanding that the competition organizer impose similar sanctions against Israel as against Russia, which was excluded from the competition by the European Broadcasting Union after the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Even before Thursday’s semi-final, there were unofficial reports that the broadcaster may muffle sounds coming from the audience during Eden Golan’s performance. EBU representatives assured that . We, the journalists of culture.gazeta.pl, are not sound experts, but when we watched the broadcast independently in three homes, we had the impression that we could hear much fewer reactions than during the recorded rehearsals. During Israel’s performance, in our opinion, the audience was relatively rarely shown – and if it was, it was either from a distance or in a rather quick montage with short shots. However, we certainly didn’t notice any Palestinian flag or pro-Palestinian banner during the broadcast – Golan’s fans, however, flew the flags of her country.

Eden Golan booed in the Eurovision 2024 semi-final? This recording confirms

However, recordings from the audience began to appear online, confirming that there was booing and booing during Israel’s semi-final performance. This can be heard, among others, in this video:

Eden Golan was among Thursday’s ten finalists. This means that he will perform in the concert on Saturday. So this is probably not the end of the protests.
