ABAO Bilbao Opera merges tradition and modernity in its 73rd season

“A season that moves from the universal tradition of the models of late romanticism and post-romanticism of the 19th century, to the evolutionary modernity of the change to the 20th century, with registers of comedy, verismo and drama.” This is how they presented today the 73rd Season of ABAO Bilbao Operawhich will begin on October 19 with Donizetti’s ‘Don Pasquale’.

In this morning’s presentation, in Bilbao, the president of ABAO Bilbao Opera, Juan Carlos Matellanesand the artistic director, Cesidio Niñohave highlighted that the new season “grows with more cultural and informative activities, social programs and an artistic proposal that includes eleven titles.”

Under the heading “Irresistibly opera”, leading figures on the international scene, prestigious musical masters, premieres, new productions and co-productions “make up the new opera season in Bilbao to seduce members and fans,” according to the organizers. Seven operas will be offered at the Euskalduna Bilbao and four shows at the Teatro Arriaga.

Among the operas and shows projected, the premiere of new productions and own co-productions for ‘Don Pasquale’ and ‘Il Trittico’ and the revival of ‘Otello’, also an ABAO production.

Carlos Álvarez, Ángeles Blancas, Karita Mattila, Chiara Isotton, Gwyn Hughes Jones, Oksana Dyka, Silvia Tro Santafé, Ismael Jordi, Jorge de León and Ermonela Jaho are some of the great voices that will participate in the new season.

Matellanes has also highlighted the programming ABAO Txiki, which is celebrating two decades and this year comes with four shows for different ages. “Three of them with school sessions that revalidate ABAO’s commitment to training, musical education and children and family audiences,” they said.

With the commitment to “bring opera closer to all of society”, the subscription amounts and prices in different modalities.
