Reviewers without mercy. “Inept and poorly made.” This is how they rated a German film about Poland

At this year’s Berlinale, “Treasure”, a film by a German director, was aroused great emotions among the participants, most of which was shot in Poland, and the cast included a galaxy of local stars. Although its plot touches on socially important issues, critics’ reviews from the beginning left a lot to be desired. Now its first official announcement has appeared online.

“Treasure” is a tragicomedy created by German director Julia von Heinz, and its script was based on the novel “Too Many Men” by Lily Brett. Although its world premiere is scheduled for June 2024 in the United States, and will most likely be distributed in other countries in September, its first pre-premiere screenings took place in February during the 74th . However, the reviews so far are not optimistic.

The German director shot the film in Poland. The plot of “Treasure” refers to war and the Holocaust

The film takes place in the 1990s in Poland, just after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Its main character is Ruth, a music journalist from New York, who, together with her father Edek, wants to know and understand the history of her family. They are helped by a Polish taxi driver, Stefan, who allows them to travel around every corner of the country. They arrive, among others: to the factory that belonged to their ancestors and the apartment where her father spent his childhood.

Although they have no malicious intentions, the new tenants are not thrilled with their visit, fearing that they have only come to regain what was taken from them during the war. Although the man wants to end the journey at this stage, Ruth does not give up. Her goal is to reach the Auschwitz camp, which she ultimately succeeds.

The trailer for “Treasure” debuted online. The reviewers left no stone unturned

It is not the first time that Julia von Heinz raises the subject in her work. In one of the interviews, she explained why she mainly focuses on this in her productions. – As a third-generation German after the Holocaust, I feel a responsibility and a need to talk about history. In my films, I try to answer the question of what the Holocaust did to us and how it affects subsequent generations – . Therefore, the cast of “Treasure” included many Polish accents, and on the screen appeared, among others: , Maria Mamona and Robert Besta. The main characters were created by American actress Lena Dunham and Stephen Fry from Great Britain.

The first official trailer of the production has just been released online, but viewers’ opinions are divided. This is not a surprise, however, because after the Berlinale critics expressed their disappointment and considerable dissatisfaction.

A strangely indifferent work. The film seems as gray and emotionally underexposed as its cinematography

This movie is a clumsy and poorly made mess. It’s hard to dissect it after one viewing and pinpoint exactly what it’s about. This is where everything went wrong

– she stated in her review. There were no major reservations about the cast; in fact, in most cases the actors were praised for their charisma and noticeable respect for the subject matter discussed in the film.
