The writer Joan Didion was distinguished by her characteristic, intricate and journalistic eye. In 2002, Barack Obama presented her with the National Humanities medal, calling her “the most respected and observant observer of American politics and culture.” He also added that it was a huge surprise for him that Didion has not received this award so far, he says.

Joan Didion wrote 19. Although she debuted in 1963 with the novel “Run River”, which she wrote while working in the American “Vogue”, in Poland she began to gain the greatest popularity in recent years. Some of her books were published in our country in the 1980s, but she began to gain publicity in our country in 2019 after the publication of the “Year of Magical Thinking”, in which she described mourning after the loss of her husband. In 2021, a collection of essays written by Didion between 1968-2000, which is “I’ll tell you what I think about it”, was released. Interestingly, many Poles heard about Joan Didion thanks to the documentary “All in Breakup”, which is available on the streaming platform.

Joan Didion was born in 1934. She spent her childhood in Sacramento, California. Her family, due to the work of her father, who was a professional soldier, often moved. Due to this, Joan Didion felt insecure, unable to find herself in company. At the age of five, she began her adventure with writing.

According to The Guardian, when her father was stationed in Colorado Springs, she walked through a mental hospital near their home and recorded conversations which she then turned into stories. In a 2003 interview with The Guardian, she told about an incident that happened when she was 10 years old. Writing a story about a woman who died in the ocean absorbed her so much that she wanted to feel firsthand what happened to the heroine she created. Didion admitted that she almost drowned then, but never told her parents about it.

In 1956, she graduated from the University of California. In her final year of study, she won first place in an essay competition sponsored by “Vogue”. The main prize was a job in a magazine, where she worked as a copywriter for two years. In the following years, she published her own publications. In the 70s and 80s she was an icon of journalism. Her style was described as “minimalist, elegant and somewhat cool”.
