Online shopping has already become commonplace. You can find everything on the Internet, and even the prices are often more attractive than in stationary stores. Unfortunately, not all sellers are honest. A 30-year-old resident of the Gostyń district found out about this.

The police informed the media about the unfortunate purchases of a 30-year-old woman from the Gostynin district. The woman ordered two pairs of branded shoes using the popular Marketplace platform. The price seemed favorable because the total cost of purchases was PLN 450. Even though she did not pay for the order in advance but chose the cash on delivery option, she fell victim to fraud.

She bought designer shoes online. She was surprised when she opened the package

It turned out that the shipment not only did not contain the models she had chosen based on the photo, but also the shoes in the package were completely worthless to the buyer. “She immediately contacted the seller, who explained that there had been an error in the warehouse. He offered to replace the shoes with the correct ones or refund the money, which the buyer agreed to,” the subcommittee reported in a statement. Monika Curyk, press officer of the Gostyń police.

Although the seller’s reaction gave hope for a happy ending to this case, this did not happen. A few days later, contact was lost. “Despite promises, the woman did not receive a refund or the ordered shoes,” we read.

Police advise: Be vigilant

The 30-year-old’s story may be a warning to everyone who uses online shopping. The Gostynin police have prepared a guide on how to safely buy things online. Here are some tips:

  • Inspect items in person before purchasing, purchasing only from local sellers;
  • Check buyer/seller profiles for user ratings and be alert if the profiles that posted the comment were only recently created;
  • Check the original price of the items and if there is a significant difference between the advertised price and the price offered by the official manufacturer – be careful, it may be a fake or defective product;
  • Be careful with promotions and never provide personal information to gain access to an attractive offer;
  • Use only trusted payment methods such as PayPal, Facebook Checkout, card payments, as they offer refund options;
  • Contact only via Facebook – fraudsters like to move the conversation to another platform, where it is easier for them to deceive people and prevent them from questioning the transaction.
  • Never ship items before payment has been made;
  • Do not send authentication codes to potential buyers;
  • If you suspect you are dealing with a scammer, you should report the seller.
