The first three winners of the Euskadi Literature Awards were announced today at the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián by Bingen Zupiria, Minister of Culture and Language Policy of the Basque Government
In the category of Literature in Basque, the novel has won “Light”, by Pello Lizarralde; “Alder Hill”, by Anjel Lertxundi, is the best work of Children’s and Youth Literature in Euskera; while the Best Literary Translation into Basque is the one made by Joxan Elosegi of the book “The mountain sings and dances” by the Catalan writer Irene Solà.
In the opinion of the jury, Pello Lizarralde In his work Argiantza he introduces us to characters in constant transit, and the amazing atmosphere that he builds around them completely captivates the readers. On the other hand, the book “Haltzaren Muinoa” by Anjel Lertxundi is for the jury a “work of great literary quality, composed of phrases and short chapters, rich in references to tradition and youth literature; also rich in its agile, poetic and careful way of narrating”.
Thirdly, the jury for the Prize for Literary Translation into Basque has highlighted “the stylistic richness of the translation” by Joxan Elosegi “since it has managed to pour into Basque an equally intense and magical fluid from the original. In this sense, it is worth noting also the imagination and creative capacity shown by the translator when responding to the challenges posed by the style and tone of Irene Solà’s text “.
Each award has an endowment of 18,000 euros, which can be increased by an additional 4,000 euros if the work is published in another language. The winner in the category Literary Translation into Basque will receive 18,000 euros.
The Euskadi literary awards will be awarded on November 18 at the Artium museum in Vitoria. Next week the winners will be announced in the modalities of Literature in Spanish, Illustration of Literary Work, Essay in Basque and Essay in Spanish.
