“Reindeer” is one of Netflix’s biggest hits in recent years. Richard Gadd decided to make a series based on his own experiences. The story filled with traumas and painful memories of the hero moved viewers and critics. Seemingly, the main plot of the production is the meeting of the on-screen Donny with Martha. The woman quickly becomes obsessed with her new friend and starts stalking him. Gadd claims he was harassed by Martha for four and a half years. During this time, he received 41,071 e-mails from her, wrote 744 tweets about him, sent letters containing 106 pages and 350 hours of voice messages.
“The real Martha” from “Reindeer” spoke out: I am the victim
It was not difficult to predict that in the real world the roles would be reversed. After being informed that they had just seen Gadd’s “true story”, viewers of the series started looking for his real perpetrators on the Internet. The hero of the story appealed to people not to do it, and even noted with irritation that it was proof that not everyone understood what the production was about.
Unfortunately, Gadd’s words did not work, and the Internet is full of conspiracy theories about the series’ characters. One of them sounds particularly likely. The name of a woman circulating on social media who resembles Martha from the series, has a legal background, and there is evidence confirming that she wrote literally the same things about Gadd online that were said in the series.
Is ‘The Real Martha’ stalking a Daily Mail journalist?
The Daily Mail website inflamed the situation even further. The editors came up with the idea of doing an interview with the “real Martha”. The website did not disclose the details of the interlocutor, who confessed that “she is the victim” and that Gadd “abuses an older woman via television for fame and money.” The woman also emphasized that today she receives death threats and is harassed by viewers of the series. The Daily Mail’s interlocutor announced that she was considering taking legal action against Gadd, who did not ensure that her character remained anonymous to the production’s recipients.
After the interview with the “real Martha” on the Daily Mail website, another article appeared in which the author Neil Sears confesses that now he is persecuted by the “real Martha” from “Reindeer”. “As I write these words, the phone rings again,” we read in the journalist’s text. In the text, Sears states that the “real Martha” constantly calls him and sends him offensive text messages.
Due to the heavily tabloid profile of the Daily Mail website, it cannot be ruled out that the quoted articles published on the website may be far-fetched. It is also worth adding that Richard Gadd assured that he took care to conceal the identity of the characters we see in the series. He emphasized in interviews that even his stalker might not recognize herself on screen.
