On March 14, 1980, the then four-year-old, together with her father and grandmother, arrived at the airport where they were to welcome Anna Jantar, who was returning from the United States. She celebrated her birthday 11 days earlier, her mother was carrying her suitcase full of gifts. At 11:15, the Il-62 “Mikołaj Kopernik” plane from New York crashed near the Okęcie airport. 77 passengers and 10 crew members died on the spot. Nobody survived.
When Anna Jantar died, Natalia Kukulska was 4 years old. “I didn’t understand what happened”
Natalia didn’t know what was happening. She found out about her mother’s death later. – Then at the airport, right after the disaster, in all the confusion, among crying people, I didn’t understand what had happened. I remember how my grandmother ripped the bouquet of freesias out of my hands and threw them on the ground. I remember ambulances resuscitating families and alcohol being given to calm them down – a few years ago in an interview in “Gala”. She also admitted that she only knew the details from stories. Details like how the people who arrived at the crash site stole everything they could find. Most of it was lost, including the toys she was carrying for her daughter as a birthday present. – They stole what was left after the disaster – she said.
Natalia Kukulska fought for a long time to be labeled a child star and daughter of Anna Jantar. “They said dad was training me”
Anna Jantar often traveled away. Concert tours, recordings, festivals and performances had their own rules. Even though she couldn’t always cope with household chores, she always tried to do everything for her daughter. She wrote letters to her and sent cards.
I’ll get back to you soon. I miss you very much. I’m sending you a beautiful kitten on a card. Call him Puszek, look at him sometimes, and every time you look, think of mommy
– on one of them. Five years after the disaster, 9-year-old Natalia Kukulska sang the song “Puszek Okruszek”. The song, which was initially a joke by Jarosław Kukulski, brought her enormous popularity. However, it had a dark side. Even though she was still a child, her family tragedy and origins meant that the media almost never left her side, even for a moment. – People watched my every step. Later it turned out that they could also be brutal. In addition to sympathy, there was a lot of malice from journalists: that my dad was making money from me, that he was training me – after many years.
It took her a long time to distance herself from both her mother’s work and the beginnings of her career. People expected her to follow Anna Jantar’s repertoire and continue to sing children’s songs. The singer’s persistence paid off. Today, however, in his songs he often refers to emotions related to the loss of his mother and the bond he still feels.
