“” won the hearts of both readers and viewers around the world. The book saga continues to be popular, but its Netflix adaptation brought it even greater recognition. The third (and fourth) part of the series will soon be available on the platform. This time we will see the fate of Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, whom we have been following in the background since the first episode.
One of the actresses who got the role almost immediately is Golda Rosheuvel, who plays Queen Charlotte. The actress made the minimum of effort to get the job and, as she says, her fate could not have turned out differently.
“The Bridgertons”. She played Queen Charlotte. Decision in 30 seconds
For years, Golda Rosheuvel has specialized mainly in television roles, with occasional short appearances in films (e.g. in the first part of “Dune”). The role of Queen Charlotte in “Bridgertons” gave her perhaps the greatest worldwide recognition – it is difficult to find a more expressive, supporting character in this series than the eccentric queen with a different hairstyle for every day.
In one of her recent interviews, the actress recalls that she sent the recording to a casting and wasn’t particularly concerned about what would happen next. The recording was supposed to show the actress “in the role” – as she imagines the character she could play.
My then partner, now wife, and I recorded a video, which took us 30-45 minutes. I sent the recording and put it out of my mind – to be honest, I didn’t care at all. But I guess it was because I felt like I knew her so well [królową Charlottę – przyp. red.]that it was very simple. It all went smoothly, just like that – she said on “The Jennifer Hudson Show”.
Her video found its way to “Bridgertons” lead producer Shonda Rhimes, which Rosheuvel found out shortly before Christmas 2019. That meant it was good. How well, Rhimes herself later recalled on social media:
After just 30 seconds of Golda Rosheuvel’s recording, I knew that “she was the one.” I’ve never seen anyone get a character so well! “She’s the best,” Shonda Rhimes wrote at the time.
Rosheuvel herself was less effusive. When Jennifer Hudson told her on the podcast that she was destined to be queen, she replied: “I thought, ‘What the hell?!’
Queen Charlotte with her own series
Already after the first season of “Bridgerton” it was known that Netflix had a new hit that could be squeezed like a lemon. The characteristic and eccentric character of the queen was waiting to be written from scratch – the series hinted at something about her past, it was known about the king’s illness, loneliness at court and fixation with the weddings of other people from society. Golda Rosheuvel more than made up for the lack of tangible details – a menacing look, a slight raise of her eyebrows was enough to tell that the queen disapproved of something. No wonder viewers demanded more.
And they got more. Already after the premiere of the second part of “Bridgertons”, it was known that an additional series from the romantic universe would be created. Queen Charlotte has her own story, which shows not only her youth, but also the youth of the mother of the Bridgerton maidens and bachelors, Lady Violet and Lady Danbury.
