Chris Hemsworth on his diagnosis and Alzheimer’s disease. “I’m pissed”

Chris Hemsworth announced over a year ago that he had been diagnosed with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease. The actor wanted to focus on his family, but the American media reported that he was suffering from dementia and was preparing to die.

in 2020, he appeared on the set of the documentary “Limitless”. The program was supposed to show how the actor best known for the role of Thor in Marvel films exceeds the limits set by his body. While working on the production, Hemsworth learned that he had a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease – the ApoE4 gene was responsible for it, the carriers of which are eight to even ten times more likely to suffer from dementia in the future compared to people who do not have this version of the gene. The mere presence of ApoE4 does not mean that the disease will develop, but luck is one thing and statistics are another.

Hemsworth stated that he wanted to focus on his family and after “Limitless” he temporarily stopped acting in any productions. Now, in an interview with “Vanity Fair”, he criticized the American media.

Chris Hemsworth on his diagnosis

Shortly after Hemsworth’s announcement, the American media went into a frenzy. The actor was described as dying, the diagnosis as “merciless” and he himself as succumbing to dementia without a fight. All the headlines that appeared in the media were mostly sensationalism, as Chris Hemsworth now talks about in an interview with “Vanity Fair”.

I’m pissed because I felt like I shared something very personal and exposed myself a lot to talk about it. But no matter how many times I said that “it’s not a death sentence”, the media described that I had dementia, that I had rethought my whole life and was retiring, he explained.

Hemsworth was found to have a double copy of the ApoE4 gene during a blood test he underwent for “Limitless.” In one of the episodes of the program, after the diagnosis, the actor confesses that the knowledge that one day he may not remember his life, wife and children terrifies him. Dementia is not a foreign disease to him – his grandfather passed away in the same way. “He didn’t know who not only his grandchildren, but his children, were for years. It was heartbreaking.” What’s worse, the actor’s father was also diagnosed with early symptoms of the disease.

His desire for a temporary break from work was taken as a sign that Hemsworth’s disease was already developing. Meanwhile, a year ago, the actor said in one of his interviews that the two were unrelated.

I have been working non-stop for ten years, I have three children with whom I finally want to spend more time. Information about my tendency to develop the disease… This allowed me to make a lot of changes – from the way I eat, through training and exercising my mind – he told “Entertainment Tonight”.
