“Pearl from Madagascar” conquers the balconies of Poles. It has the ability to self-clean

Spring is in full bloom. It’s time to decorate balconies with colorful plants. We usually reach for varieties that are familiar to us, such as garden petunia, geranium or fuchsia. However, it is worth trying something exotic that will make every neighbor jealous and will please the eye all summer long.

Recently, we have been able to purchase pink catarantus seedlings in garden centers. It is a beautiful, luxuriantly flowering plant that looks like an impatiens. It comes in many varieties and differs mainly in the color of the flowers. The most common ones are pink, red and white.

Can balcony flowers take care of themselves? It’s possible

Pink catarrh, called “pure flower” in botany, is an excellent plant for people who have little time for balcony gardening. It has the ability to self-clean itself from withered flowers, thanks to which, without our intervention, it looks beautiful throughout the entire flowering period, which peaks in summer. If properly cultivated, it reaches a height of up to 40 cm.

Catarantus care is easy. Follow a few rules and the effect will surely please you

For a plant to look aesthetically pleasing, we must meet several conditions. They are not particularly demanding, but it is worth taking care of them. Due to the exotic origin of the plant, it likes warm and sunny places. The duration of sunlight should be 8 hours, so people who have a sunny balcony or terrace should refrain from growing it.

The pot in which we put the flowers should be equipped with drainage. You should also make sure that the soil is constantly moist, especially on hot days. Let’s be careful, however, the plant does not like to be watered. It is worth feeding it throughout the flowering season with special fertilizers for flowering plants. The good news is that it is resistant to most pests and diseases, but due to poor care it can fall victim to aphids or fungi.

You may not find catarrhus in Poland. Then look for periwinkle

Pink periwinkle is the Polish name for katarantus. Very often it is the only one used in garden centers. Please pay attention to this when looking for a plant for yourself, so as not to deprive yourself of the pleasure of having it solely by name. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.
